Getting in Shape

Sit down excersizes?

A few weeks ago I found out I had a blood clot in my leg, so I've been sitting down most of the time since. Since this I have gained some weight. I was 5'6" and 165 and now I know I have at least put on a few pounds. I feel huge and my stomach has pain it feels like because it is bigger and uncomfortable with the weight. Is this normal? Also, are there any non-legged exersizes that anyone can suggest. I had just started the office Biggest Loser competition and had lost 10 lbs. I was going to get in shape and feel better about myself and now I'm at a loss as to how i'm going to do that. Also, i'm getting married in October. Blah.

Watching what you eat is (in my opinion) the best way to control your weight.  With the blood clot, i'd consult with your doctor or a physical therapist about what exercises they recommend.  They'd be your best source of information.

I don't feel comfortable really recommending anything as (not a doctor) I've always heard that any kind of exercise could cause a clot to break loose and a pulmonary embolism is not joking matter.

Have you been medically cleared for exercise of any kind?
  • He said I could excersize, I just am wary of doing an extensive amount of excersize w that leg.

Ah!  In that case, do you happen to have swimming available to you?  I'll bet that'd be great if it's an option.  Otherwise, there are lots of lifting based exercises that you can use that are upper body only.  Have you considered floor exercises?  Knee pushups, a whole variety of crunches, yoga.. all should be able to be altered enough to keep you off that leg.

I would definitely consult your doctor over what types of exercises (s)he thinks are safe.  Of all the medical things I do know ways around for working out (the range of injuries I gave myself in my younger days is astonishing), I haven't had any experience with clots so I don't feel comfortable trying to recommend anything.

On an unrelated note, anna I love your BBT gif.  That remains one of my favorite episodes of that show.
  • I have gained alot of weight since I got a sit down job and I am trying to lose a little for my wedding too. A fellow I work with said if you can contract your stomach muscles while you sit that it almost like doing crunches on the floor. Just have to sit up straight and contract your stomach muscles for a few seconds and then release for a few seconds. You do that during a lunch break you could do maybe 200 crunches in a half hour just sitting down at a desk. Try it. I am.

  • Im with the others on getting recommendations from docs before doing anything major.

However, I myself am trying to get back to excersize after a fairly major ankle sprain, and don't live anywhere near a year round pool.  And someone actually pointed me towards "chair aerobics"... sounds like something you may look into... but once again I would definately clear the actual activity with the doc.
