Getting in Shape

Re: Crash diets

  • Hello... newbie here. First post I am qualified to speak on :) I have done the Master Cleanse seven times now. I did it every finals week in college for that little energy boost it gives you (your body isn't digesting food, so you don't ever get that post meal slump). I agree that it is not a very healthy thing to do, and you WILL gain the weight back. Half of what you lose is water weight. However, nothing, absolutely nothing, will allow you to lose so many inches off your waistline in 10-14 days. I typically go from 26" to 24", but when my mom does it, she has lost 4-5 in! So if you are in a real pinch, I guess two weeks of partial starvation isn't going to kill you. Personally, like I said, I feel great when I am on the fast, much more energetic and alert than I usually am.

Did you even read the article??  Crash diets are incredibly bad for your body.  BAD.  And more so, yo-yo dieting is even worse.  From a health standpoint, you are better off not even losing the weight than constantly losing and regaining the same 10 lbs.

  • I am so glad that so many ppl feel the same way I do. I also am against those starvation diets, fad diets (altho I started taking ACAI Berry and someone told me this is a fad?)  I am not doing it to lose weight, but to increase energy/metabolism.  I am 125 lbs I don't think I need to lose any weight.  I just read that it had antioxidants and is good for you and is organic.  Not a way to lose weight at all.  So is this okay??? bc I am not on a diet.  Just eating right, drinking lots of water, and regular walking for exercise
  • Healy, if you're concerned about energy and antioxidants. Eat blueberries, spinach and other "super foods." Seriously. Take a multi-vitamin. The acai berry diet is definitely a fad and a waste of time and money.

  • true. I'll take a multi vitamin.  I am also into Honest Tea.  It is at wawa in NJ.  or at shop rite etc.  A ice tea with antioxidants in it.  But I'll df try multi-vitamins over acai berry.
  • acai berry supplements are fine as part of a bigger picture healthy life. just dont rely on them to solve all your problems.

i followed "the weigh loss cure they dont want you to know about" loosely a few years ago., basically just adding some of the supplements into to my lower calorie meal plan. i did the colon cleanse pills and heavy metal cleanse, it was a great kick start to my weight loss. i did not go into the hcg phases of the diet. and i lost some weight and kept it off, i didnt stick with the low calorie diet

now, i am not endorsing crash diets, i would never restrict myself to super low calories or inject myself with anything that a dr would never prescribe. my point is that you can take information you get and be smart with it. well some people can, apparently not everyone...

That is just frightening, that made me shudder.
  • 1st, i'm new to these blog posts so please go easy on me. ok, honestly, I've tried alot of the otc crap in the pharmacy, and BIG SURRISE they dont work!!

what i did find that works is Weight Watchers. (b4 you yell, i'm not here to promote them) Generally, increase your fresh fruit and veggies, eat small portions of lean protein (grilled chicken/fish), and MOVE. If i can't walk outside, I try and beat my high score on the Wii.

    basically, use you common sense.

  • I bought a really hot "outfit" to wear for my fiance for Valentine's Day and for 2 weeks I lived on Diet Rockstar and salad. I have to say, I felt like I was going to pass out, but I looked HOT. Then I ate an entire pizza. By myself.

In graduate school, I "didn't have time" (or money!) to eat properly, so my diet consisted of coffee and grilled cheese. I lost 20lbs and I looked HOT. I also wanted to kill myself, but instead, opted for 24 straight hours of sleep after defending my Master's Thesis. Then I ate an entire pizza. By myself.

Now, in my dieting wisdom, I have one last secret: veggies, fruit, lean protein, whole grains and for God's sake, take a walk or something. Drink absurd amounts of water. And stop complaining.

Since then, I have only a slice of pizza. And it has never tasted so delicious. :)

  •  i have always said that crash diets are bad for you. That was my first impression with the isaproducts. It all sounded to good to be true. but now I want to let everyone know that I have found something amazing. I would never have thought that it would work until I lost the weight. Jump start that diet with a 9 day cleanse and lose on adverage 7 pounds. Vacation coming up? Wedding? Work Event? Look your best www.weightloss.isagenix.com This is not a crash diet.... Its a jump start to a healty new lifestyle
  • There is nothing I would ever buy on the market to cleanse my body. However, a true cleanse or a fast is not bad for you. When I feel gunky and sluggish, it's usually because I've let alot of simple sugars back into my diet or I've stopped moving. I simply eat completely vegan for 3 weeks, which means no dairy or meat (including fish and eggs) and I cut sweeteners. It is remarkable how whole and balanced I feel after that. Plus, it gets you moving, mentally and physically to come up with meals that are not bland or boring, and it helps me remember what great food comes from the ground. Nothing about it is starving you, I eat to satisfy my nourishment just like normal.

  • for those asking for a food that is good to add to your diet? SWEET POTATO!!!

google it; the amount of different health benefits or vitamins are aMAzInG!!! I took a nutrition course and we went over all the different things you should have in your diet, and after the first 5 slides that had "sweet potato" at the end, we all ended up saying in unison "ANDDDD SWEEET POTATO!!"

seriously good for you; as long as you dont do the sweet potato casserole with the marshmellow and stuff...

regular with some light butter (no salt--you don't need it! tastes great!) or with a slight bit of brown sugar....theyre not starchy so theyre good; also sweet potato chips or fries if your craving, its a healthy swap!!
  • This article is great!  When I first started losing weight everyone kept asking me, "oh what diet are you on" And I had to keep explaining to them...

I'm on the ONLY diet that works.  Eating healthy and exercising. NOT THAT COMPLICATED!!

  • You guys are harsh, so I will say I understand where the girl was coming from.  Master Cleanse "Beyonce diet/lemonade Diet" is not healthy, but it does work...Thats all she was saying and its true, it does work.  But I could only take it for 3 days and I was done. Anytime I crash diet I eat a whole LARGE pizza alone like the other lady.  Low carb has worked for me, and it can be healthy as long as you choose the correct carbs to eat.  I lost 8 lbs in one week with low carbs, its healthy and it can be a lifestyle change if you try hard enough. I only reccommend it if you really need to lose weight in a small time frame.  The master cleanse is too hard anyway, healthy or not.

  • omg no those cleanses do NOT work. they are temporary.. you are losing water weight and fluids.. not actual fat.. you are losing muscles the more you starve yourself and muscle is 10 times more important than losing some water weight that will come back earlier than you think

at least muscle makes someone look and feel fit and make the physically able to do more.. and not be dainty and tired and cant lift the groceries because they are too starved and undernourished.

Muscles also help you burn more calories after your work out is over, and all throughtout the next day.

  • I have 8 months until my wedding, and i'm trying to get started early. I've started going to the Weigh Station, which is particular only to Virginia i think. It's physician managed, and i've already lost 10 pounds in three weeks. Its very simple though. You eat 10 ounces of protein a day for 2 to 3 days. Then, after that, you keep your 10 ounces of protein each day, but add in 2 to 4 servings of fruit and 2 to 4 servings of vegetables. When you first get started (if you are anything like me; i used to eat everything i could reach) 10 ounces of protein seems ridiculous, but if you put it in perspective and once you get used to it, it's really plenty. I have a whole can of tuna with a little bit of mayo, onions, pickles, and a light cheesestick for lunch, two or three hardboiled eggs and an apple for breakfast, and a 4 oz piece of fish with a salad, green vegetable, and grapes for dinner. And you can have unlimited lettuce for your salads as long as you only use 2 T of light or fat free dressing. You move at a pace of 10 to 20 pounds a month, and its really not bad for you.

  • I have to agreet that eating soup does work! Soup and cardio! One can of chunky chicken noodle soup is only 110 calories, and deliciously filling if you drink a full glass of water before and after the soup.

Remember, drinking water is key! The sugar from soda and energy drinks will kill your diet.
  • Wondering what I can do to make my dress fit that is about a size too small. I have 83 days left till my wedding. I'm excited but scared that my dress won't fit in time. I only eat about 1000 calories per day but because of how busy I am with the fiance's kids and work and wedding planning exercise is hard to fit in. Has anyone tried the HCG diet? Does it work? My soon to be SIL has lost 10lbs in a week. Help please!!
  • to s.grabauskas in NH - you are hilarious.

1 - You're eating WAY too few calories.  I couldn't tell you exactly how many you need, because I do not know your calorie expenditure/body composition/etc.  But 1000 is too few for anyone.

2 - I don't know what the HCG diet is, oops.  But your SIL-to-be shouldn't be losing 10 pounds in a week, unless she is going through some crazy intense week-long boot camp.  That's unhealthy weight loss.  My guess is that, if she is losing that weight due to the HCG diet, the HCG diet is not healthy.

The best way to lose weight is through lifestyle change - gradual diet change and gradual exercise change.  83 days is plenty of time to implement healthy changes into your diet.

Diet: Cut out liquid calories, watch your portion size (your fist is a good way to measure portion size - the majority of correct portions of foods/drinks should not be bigger than your fist), choose leaner cuts of meat, use healthier cooking methods.  Don't eat out - you have no idea exactly what is in your food, or what its nutritional value is.  Don't keep foods that you cannot control yourself around in your house, and keep portioned snacks with you at work.  Choose which of these things you need to work on the most, and make that your first change - add other changes in weekly or biweekly.

Exercise: Walking is the best place to start.  Exercise with your FI's kids - kids need an hour a day.  Take breaks during work to walk.  Take the stairs, at work, at the store - everywhere!  You can do exercise in 5-minute intervals.  A lot of people don't think that is "allowed," but that's more than OK if it works best for your busy schedule.  Do 10 pushups in the morning and 10 at night...do jumping jacks several times a day for breaks at work...have a working lunch, and take your lunch break to go on a walk...things like that.

Hope that helps, feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.
  • I tried that diet (cayenne pepper and lemonade) for one week. My co-workers yelled at me so much I had to stop.  You see I'm a female firefigher and this diet made me feel so weak, I could not keep up. I had to stop or the guys at my firehouse threaten to force feed me LOL. I love these guys. They definitely care about me

  • Instead of the lemonaid and cayenne pepper diet, which is unhealthy, drink an 8 oz. glass of apple vinegar before every major meal and before you go to sleep. It's not a completely bad taste and it kickstarts the enzymes in your stomache and colon to digest and metabolize food faster. Since the food absorbs into your body faster, there isnt too much fat being produced because it is broken down instead of just sitting there. But always eat healthy. It doesnt really matter how much calories you eat, its the fat and trans fat content that is bad. Pasta and bread are great too, as long as its wohle grain or whole wheat, not starch.
