Any workout ideas for someone with arthritis?

I have arthritis in my left knee. I go on walks to start my workout routine but I also want to do other exercises to help me lose weight and get toned up; especially in my thighs, legs, butt, and tummy. I can't run, because it starts to hurt immediatly, it hurts to bend down so I'm limited to exercises. Any suggestions?

Re: Any workout ideas for someone with arthritis?

  • Start with something that is easy to modify like yoga and weight lifting.  I have a bad knee but still manage to work myself through quite a few exercises.  I find that working out (although originally difficult since my knee tired so easily) really had improved my range of motion and flexibility in the joint.
  • I have arthritis as well that sometimes effects my knees - I can actually do a recumbent bike and elliptical with no issues. Before I do ANYTHING though, I always make sure to stretch really good. The few times I didn't stretch first, my knees would be killing me.

  • For me, it's been trial and error. I have arthritis in both of my ankles that pains me after standing or walking for prolonged periods of time. Any type of exercise of impact hastens the process. I basically try to soften any movement I do. If it involves jumping up and down, I am extra careful to land softly and not go too high. I also try to do more exercises that have me seated or require less ankle movement. Perhaps your doctor or physical therapist (if you had one) could suggest good exercises or warn against those to avoid.
  • I've had arthritis in both of my knees since I was 15 -- and it's really a matter or trial and error -- and as someone else said -- the more you work at it -- the better it'll get.  I do zumba, walk/hike, I'm ATTEMPTING to run, etc etc.  I'm not saying start off there.

When I initally went to rehab/therapy for my knee -- my dr made me ride a stationary bike, use the elipitcal -- both very low impact to your knees.  He also made me do leg presses to work on strenghting it...and we're not talking light weight leg presses -- I was doing 180 lb presses when I was about 130 lbs.

  • Do you have access to a heated pool?  "Water jogging" or any type of aquatic exercise provides resistance with practically zero impact on the joints.  If you aren't an experienced swimmer, use a floatie belt to jog or even do laps.  You don't even have to get your head wet if you don't want to.  Please don't even try to run or jump at this point!  Kudos to all the above posters for working with their arthritis, I know it can be very discouraging sometimes.  I send you thoughts of strength and courage!
  • I have endstage traumatic arthritis in my ankle and get my exercise in the pool or on the spinn bike.
  • I have been struggling with my weight for awhile, fluctuating between 175 and 155...In January I started with ACE as a skeptic. I am sure, like me, you all have tried everything. Between Walmart and Walgreens I sure have!
