My fitness pal help

I think my post got deleted... or I'm an idiot and can't figure out how to post. So, I'll try again.

Im currently using myfitnesspal and am having trouble figure part of it out. What if I make my own dish at home. How do I determine how many calories I'm actually consuming? For example, the other night I made goolash. I attempted to scan every single ingredient (time consuming) but then still couldnt figure out to to change the serving size to the appropriate amount to what I'm actually eating. Does anyone have any suggestions? or am I just SOL?

Also, I could use a little extra encouragement so if someone would like to add me I'd really appreciate it!

Have you tried using the recipe feature? Then you can put in the entire amounts of each ingredient and divide it into servings. For example if I make dinner and FI and I both get dinner and lunch out of that, I divide that into 4 servings (making sure to keep them all the same size). If you are using the app it is located under "more" and then "edit food & exercises" and then "my recipes." Anytime I make something new I add it in there. That way I always have it for future reference. When you go to add to your food diary there is an option to add recipe. Hope that helps!

  • I also have a question about recipe calculator too.   How do you use a previously created recipe as an ingredient in a new recipe?

For example, I premake biscuit mix and then use it to make buttermilk biscuits or pancakes.

    Thanks!

  • Smart Cupcake - I'm not sure what you are asking? I would just enter in the ingredients exactly as you used them. Create a new recipe or edit the one you have saved in my fitness pal. I cook a lot, so pretty much everything I eat gets entered as a recipe. That way if I ever make it again, it's in there so I save so much time by not having to re do it. I have several receipes in MFP that are just variations of the same dish.

  • Maribeth - Sorry if was being unlcear.   Let me try again.

Sometimes I make batches of things which I will later use as an ingredient in another recipe.  I have entered the batches into the recipes but I can't seem to use a "serving" of the large batch in new recipe.

I make biscuit mix (instead of buying bisquick, as I am rather cheap) and then I will use  1 cup of biscuit mix to make pancakes (along with an egg and some milk)

How would I enter the pancake recipe since I can't seem to be able to use a recipe as an ingredient.

    Is this more clear?

    Thanks
  • Haha

I just noticed that my picture says I joined in 2006.  I wasn't even dating my finace in 2006.   I must have joined to research cakes or something.   Odd!
  • I just played with my own app to test what you are asking. So go into your diary and hit the meal you want to track. Say for breakfast you want to use 1 cup of your mix plus egg and milk. Hit add for breakfast, click on recipes, and then select the serving amount from the mix recipe you had made, then add whatever additional items you are using. I literally just did that with one of my recipes to test it. I hope that helps! If you ladies want to add me I'm bellabananas on there as well.
