Diet Help!

I still have a year before my wedding, but I am in dire need of a weightloss regimen. I am 5'11 so I am able to carry a little more weight because of the extra inches, but recently I have gained weight that I am not comfortable with. I have never needed to diet before, and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good weightloss regimen. I want to lose weight in a healthy way, but would like to start to see results soon due to engagement photos being taken. Any and all advice is much appreciated! Thanks!

  • Hello! I would love to help you out! I am actually on the same path as you. I have started to motivate myself by creating my own blog. Here is a link to my blog for ideas for staying healthy, motivated and beautiful!

  • Hey! I am 6 feet tall. I haven't heard of any other tall people around here, so that is cool. I know what you mean about being able to distribute more weight. I sometimes feel a lot "bigger" than other people, but I really am just taller and proportioned.
  • Keep a food journal to track what and when you eat.  Also, start moving more!  Even just a ten minute walk is a good start.  If you get Netflix, you can watch workout videos.  There are some great 10 minute Solution ones that you can do anywhere from 10-50 minutes, plus Shape, Self, and Crunch videos.  Best of luck!!
  • I'm a dietitian, so I'd love to give you a few tips! First off, I hate the word "diet". There is no diet that will work for you long-term because a fad diet teaches you nothing about healthy living and you will feel like either you're "depriving" yourself or "cheating" when you want a cupcake. Not good words for your inner dialogue. The focus should be on lifestyle changes, which include a well-rounded healthy diet and physical activity. That said, Sparkpeople.com is a great website to get advice from others who have lost weight. You can also track your calories, get recipes, advice and motivation from others. If you want a more structured program, I would recommend Weight Watchers.Their points program is based on education and lifestyle changes as opposed to straight calorie counting, and I have known many people to have success on this program. I do not recommend diets like Atkins, South Beach, Slim Fast, etc. I have know people to go on these diets and lose weight, but they put it back on (and then some) a year later. Sorry if this is TMI, but I wanted to share some of  my professional experience. HTH. Feel free to PM if you have any other questions. And good luck on your lifestyle change ;)
  • I'm on Weight Watchers and I love the new points plus program.  IT is about $40 a month if you go to meetings and about $15 a month if you do online only.  But statics show that members who go to the meets loose about 20% more weight.

  • I've been doing P90X for the past 3 months, and I love it!  It's pretty hard at first, but now it's just fun.  I like it because I do it at home, on my own schedule, no matter what the weather is outside, and I only need a couple of hand weights and a mat.  It not only burns fat, but it builds muscle too, so I've seen some major changes in my body - my arms look a lot more toned, not flabby.  I've lost 11 pounds (and I'm sure I've gained muscle, too), and for being 5'3, it makes a big difference.  I had to have my wedding dress taken in 2 sizes!  I'm really happy with the results.
  • I am also on WW. I have always had a hard time losing weight but since getting engaged I have lost 30 lbs. It's great because I don't have to not eat things, I just learn how to eat better and making better choices. It can be a little pricey but I definitely think it's worth it. I recommend it all the time
  • I am doing bodybyvi. It helps you lose the weight fast, but in a healthy way by replacing two meals a day with a nutrituos shake. my dad lost 40 lbs in 6 weeks on it. Ive lost seven in two weeks. The website is www.bodybyvi.com/lyonsmassage. I would highly reccomend it. the shakes are good and its really easy to stick to since you can eat reasonably for dinner. also, its very nutritious.
  • Counting calories has always worked best for me.  I like using fitday.com to track the calories because it makes it so easy plus it's free!  So far I've lost almost 20 pounds since January.
  • I have been following a food meal that is for Diabetics that around my area, two sisters have followed for almost a year and have lost together over 300 pounds.  I have also been following the Biggest Loser Cardio Max exercise video that really kicks your butt and I highly recommend!
  • Hi!
I am also in a similar boat. I recently dropped a size by walking everywhere and drinking green tea. I literally now get up from my desk and go on a walk for any breaks I take. I hurt my back a couple of months ago, and was told I had to stop doing any exercise. I started to gain weight and then found that it helped my back to walk a lot. Also, I started drinking green tea every afternoon, and I believe that has helped my metabolism significantly.
Now, I am also doing cardio a few times a week for 30 minutes, and trying to take the stairs instead of the elevator, when I can.
I hope all of this helps!!
  • I saw your reply and hope you don't mind me picking at your brainfor a minute... I've been working out more and trying to eat more healthy lately. But I have a problem in that I'm possibly one of the pickiest eaters in the world. Seriously, its bad. I eat virtually no vegetables and very limited fruits. (I either have an issue with the texture or just the tastes of the foods) Do you have any good tips for trying to eat healthy without gagging on the things I know I should be eating?? Thanks so much!
  • I found that I had gained about 30lbs after starting grad school.  Over the past year, I have lost 40lbs.

The biggest help for me was a free website

    http://www.thedailyplate.com

It's part of the livestrong network, made a HUGE difference in how I saw my calorie intake, and my fitness regimen.  My workouts haven't been nearly as consistant as my dieting, but it's working just the same.

    It's worth a look.
  • Hey!  Once i got engaged, i decided i wanted to not only look but feel beautiful on my wedding day.  unfortunately, over the past couple years, i have put on a lot of weight due to bad eating habits and lack of excercise.  i decided that working out was going to be the best start, but also, i completely changed my eating habits.  keeping a food journal helps alot too b/c you can see exactly what you are eating.  i found that the more i focus on this and go to the gym, the better i sleep and feel. plus, i have dropped 4 dress sizes in 2 months!!  oh, and don't forget--H20.  drink water like it's going out of style and take vitamins.  Good luck!

  • Agreed, I think if you do not like many veggies try peas and mixing them in with pasta sauces or soups or other meals that you have.
If you like smoothies, do those! You can blend other supplements in there, like fiber, etc.
Also, I completely agree with Jennifer, exercise and drink a ton of water. There are definitely vitamins that can help too, but I am not an expert on that one.

Jennifer-good for you, holy cow, 4 dress sizes in two months is a lot! I think approaching weight loss from a 'wanting to be healthier' stand-point rather than 'I need to be smaller!' is so much better for us and I personally, think it's more effective.Smile

You really MUST learn to eat fruits and vegetables. Keep trying new things. There are also cookbooks like Deceptively Delicious which disguise veggies, usually by pureeing them and adding them to other foods. Here are a couple recipes to give you an idea:
