Getting in Shape

Did anyone else buy a dress that's too small for them?

Most of my measurements fit into one smaller dress size, but I was off a 1/2 inch in my hips and waist. I opted to buy the smaller size because I recently moved states and was off my typical diet and exercise programs. I am typically smaller but in my last month in my old state, I kept going out to eat because it was "the last time I could eat there for a while," and I was constantly skipping the gym to spend time with family and friends.

I am now back on track and even have a trainer. I texted my trainer from the bridal salon and asked her if I could lose 1/2 inch in my hips and waist in 6 months (I have no feel for measurements), and she said definitely! I actually have not lost any weight, but am getting measured again Thursday and am excited/nervous to see how far I've come.

  • With it only being half an inch, I think you will be fine.  Especially knowing your recent move has affected your weight and you have a trainer to keep you on track.  Worst case scenario, I think some Spanx could take care of that extra half inch.

My hips are larger than the hip measurement for my dress as well, but my dress is ball gown shaped so it really doesn't matter.  Actually I just looked a size chart for my dress and my waist is one inch bigger than the size chart and my dress fits perfectly.

  • A half an inch in six months is doable. Just be good about watching what you eat and exercising regularly. And no, I did not buy a dress that was too small. I had the opposite problem in that I ended up buying a dress that is too big.

I would normally say that that was an awful idea, but a half an inch isn't much if you are currently not at your typical weight (assuming you gained some in the hips).
I didn't do this, but I can see why you did. I hope it works out. 6 months is a long time to create change. If you have a 1/2 inch to actually lose, then you can totally make it happen
  • Same thing happened to me... I was within the measurements for a particular size, but slightly over in the hips.  I opted to go up a size because I was afraid the dress would run small (no pattern cut is perfect and there is always an "allowance" of +/- a half-inch).  The dress was way too big and then altered down (and then felt too small-lol).  Mine was a fit and flare/A-line that needed to be fitted in the hips.

It sounds like you should be fine and, if not, something that a good pair of spanx could fix.  And PPs are right - if you are in more of a ballgown it will be fine.

  • I had the same problem as Giaspo. My hips fit the bigger measurement, and the rest the smaller one. I opted to go with the hip measurment. What a disaster. The dress was too big, even after alterations, (had to do emergency alterations a week before the wedding), and it left a really bad taste in my mouth.
I think you can totally loose a 1/2 inch in 6 months.
  • I found some before and after pics that show the difference (pls ignore the specs - I had Lasik the next day):

  • I also wanted to limit the amount of alterations that would have to be made by a tailor. I'd rather the dress come as ready as possible. I realize I will have to get some alterations made, but I am not keen on the idea of someone having to alter my dress to be a different size entirely. I did that with a bunch of my clothes when I lost weight a few years back and it didn't look as good as if the clothes were made at that size.
  • Who knows! You might get lucky and not need alterations at all.. It happens. (happened to me. I bought it off the rack and it fit like a glove)
If this gown is just a little snug in the hips, you may get lucky
  • Ummm omg super agree.
Pics or it's all lies!!! ;);)

Post pics here, or now we have an "aw" thread started. Post them aaaaaaallll We (at least i would) love to hear/see more about your wedding!

[QUOTE]Yeah, I never, ever endorse buying a dress in a smaller size as an incentive to lose weight, but I think in your case you'll be just fine.  1/2 inch over six months is definitely doable, especially since it's more of your typical size.  Also, unfair to post about your dress without posting a picture! And Giaspo, you're so pretty!  I mean, I knew that from your sig pic, but your full dress pic is amazing!  And now I want to see more pictures from GISers and may post a new thread.

Here is the dress. This isn't me though. I got it from Enzoani's (the designer's) Pinterest, and am hoping that if it is on Pinterest, it is okay to use here.

  • What does AW mean? I've been pretty active on the Knot, but not on this board for some reason.

  • Okay, I'll post a photo of me in it. It's not like if someone was online stalking, they wouldn't know who I was from my unchangeable user name. This sample is dirty, too big, and too long, but you get the idea.

  • Awwww thanks guys! I just got home and had time to read through all of these threads. Of course now I can't post because I'm not on my computer but can post some tomorrow. Yay! You made my night after a loooong tough day. :-)
