Getting in Shape

First 5k

The local YMCA is partnering up with a couple of coaches to train for a Halloween 5k. I'm so excited because I've been wanting to do one! The info session is in a couple of weeks but any advice from those who have completed a 5k?

Re: First 5k

  • It sounds like your first one, so congrats! Don't go into it with a specific time in mind to finish for your first one. Just crossing the finish line is an accomplishment. Once you get the feel for them and see how you personally feel, you can do more with a timed goal. Are they offering training sessions for the run? If so, I'd totally do it. Other than school sports or extra curricular sports, I've never been formally trained and I would jump at that chance.

  • Ditto PP. Don't get a time goal for yourself if this is your first one. If you are new to running check out the couch to 5k program, just google couch to 5k. They have a great program for beginner runners. If they are actually offering training sessions that sounds like a nice deal, I would definitely go to those. 5ks are fun you will have a ton of adrenaline the morning of your race!

  • The training sessions are twice a week for 10 weeks ($75)...I think it's a good deal. Plus the Y is offering free memberships to all who participate for core strength training.

    Thanks ladies!

  • I am also doing my first 5K on September 1- it's the Color Run!!  I chose that one because its a run/walk and for all ages and fitness levels so I won't feel as intimidated.  I am sooo not a runner!  I also am doing the couch 2 5k program, which is intervals that gradually build up to an entire 5K.  I am only on week 2 so far but it seems to be going well.

  • Congrats on your decision to do your first 5K!!!

I agree with PPs...don't set a specific time goal...just enjoy it and the sense of accomplishment that you will get when you cross the finish line!

Warning: while I completely understand that running is an acquired taste...it is like CRACK for many of us...so prepare to become obsessed girl! Wink
  • i am hoping to do my 1st 5k-the Komen race for a cure on October 7th (my wedding day lol)
    Good luck and happy training!

  • I'm excited and scared at the same time. I'm def. not a runner but want to be! Jenny, your doing one on your wedding day?!
  • I know how you feel.  I was excited and scared too for my first one this past April.  My time wasn't that good (I didn't train as much as I should have), but I felt like it was an accomplishment just finishing.  I'm running another 5K the end of September and am training much more for that one (I want to do better than the first time AND lose weight for the wedding - so I have 2 goals).

Good luck with your first 5K! :)
