Getting in Shape

Happy Weekend! (chat thread)

Hey ladies!  How's it going?  Anything new to report even if it's not GIS related?  Let's get to know each other.

I'm excited for yard sale season to begin because I'm on a mission for a cheap starter bicycle for my H.  I've finally badgered him enough that he's agreed to go on bike rides with me this summer.  It only took like 3 years to convince him (break his will).

i'm also excited for summer so that I can break out the grill more often for dinner prep.  grilled meat, pineapple, corn on the cob...  mmmmm.  Delicious.

i do need (hope) weight loss to really keep steady.  I'd love to hit a bit goal before my birthday in August so I don't feel bad going completely wild at the state fair that same week.  Funnel cake, foot long corndogs, and tubs of lemonade are on the agenda for me.

Ask me anything.

Re: Happy Weekend! (chat thread)

  • Hi Anna!

I like having a chat thread on GIS, I think it's something we've been missing.

I would kill for a grill.  FI and I have a tiny apartment, with no grilling capabilities.  Unless you want to count my countertop George Foreman... but it's just not the same.

The nicer weather is making me all sorts of anxious.  The wedding in August seems so close, and I have a ton of milestone events/fun activities happening before then that I know this summer is absolutely going to fly by.  To name a few: Easter, FI graduates law school, brother and sister graduate high school, all of my siblings (and FI's sister) have birthdays coming up... it'll be a busy spring/summer.

AW moment: I have so far lost 20 pounds. This week was the first time I was able to look in the mirror and see a different person.

Anna, since I know you've lost a significant amount of weight, was it hard for you to see yourself as a healthier person? I don't know if I'm articulating this well at all, but FI tells me he sees a major difference but sometimes when I look in the mirror my eyes sort of have to adjust to not seeing a heavier me.

Yay!  20 pounds!  Amazing.  You must have been working hard.

About seeing the weight loss: I don't at all. I've blogged about it (link in sig) and have come to the conclusion that I must have a mild form of body dismorphia.  I'm almost at 50 lbs lost, that's like the same weight as like 6 decent sized newborns.  I am aware that I MUST be smaller since I was barely squeezing into a size 18 jean and am comfortably wearing size 12 now.  BUT.  I don't see it.  At all.  I would swear that I look the exact same as I did a year ago.  Picture comparisons don't work either.  Like, practically I know I must look different, but I just don't see it and really wish I did.
  • Wow, 50 pounds? That's incredible, congratulations.

I really have to concentrate on a specific area of my body to see a difference.  Like, "okay I'm looking at my legs, yes they do look smaller."  Just glancing at myself as a whole, I see the same person.

Clothes are a major contributing factor too.  I only recently bit the bullet and bought myself some new clothes.  I can't afford a whole new wardrobe right now, but i bought some basics and the difference there has been amazing.

  • Anna- way to go on "badgering" aka encouraging your H to join you in healthy endeavors!  Does he work out with you regularly, or are you on a lonesome fitness journey?

Jude- When I had my apartment, we were allowed to use the grill ONLY if it were a certain distance from the building.  So, every few nights there would be kind of like a block party in the open field by the swimming pool.  It was kinda neat, getting to know neighbors and such, and being able to grill out even at an apartment.

As for me, well I'm thinking about doing another marathon.  One of my very dearest friends ran a marathon this past Saturday, and another friend (more of an acquaintance) ran the same marathon I did on Sunday... they have both offered to slap me upside the head for even THINKING about another one!  I find myself thinking "Well, it wasn't THAT bad... maybe I can do better!" but the truth is, it WAS that bad- but it wasn't that bad forever, and I think I can do better.  Hmmm... I dunno...
  • also- congrats to you both for your weight loss!  Having participated in the accountability threads for a while now, I know you're both doing it the healthy way- while it takes longer to reach your goal, you're more likely to STAY at your goal.  Way to go!  You're both an inspiration to others :)

Pretty lonesome generally.  The last year I've been completely solo with him just putting up with my "diet food" since I do all the cooking (poor man can only grill).  Recently he's started the pushup, squat, and crunch challenge though so maybe he's getting the memo that you can't stay young forever but exercise makes  getting older easier.

you should totally marathon. That's what marathon amnesia is for.  To make you forget the torture

The funny thing is, I actually don't think the loss has been very slow overall.  Sure, I've had 3 plateaus that each lasted over a month but It's still only been since last June.  I'm kinda shocked by it actually.

Yep, my theory is that it took more than a few months to put the weight on, why on earth would anyone expect it to take much less time to take it off?

    And Thank you so Much!

Thanks Medi!  And your old apartment sounds fun! Our building has zero grilling capabilities anyway...unless we want to go out to the dark parking lot behind it, but there are rats back there as big as my cats.

And look at you, only a week has passed and you're already contemplating another marathon!  I think you'll do one eventually.

Anna: I do all the cooking too.  FI is the master griller, and he can make a mean chili, but that's it.  I love cooking/baking so I don't mind.  And I can control how healthy the recipe is.

  • Hmmm... marathon amnesia... I've heard it's quite the epidemic.

While we're doing a chat thread, I have a few confessions to make:
(I'm not sure if everyone will see these, but here goes)

Anna- I love how you give really great advice, and you're not afraid to tell new posters that the crazy diet/pill/procedure they're thinking about doing is dangerous.  I like that you can be nice & stand your ground & promote safe practices all at the same time.  You rock!

lbarr-I love that you're the "vendor police"... and Jude too!  Seriously, ever time I see a thread that sounds like a plug for a vendor I fully expect to see one of you guys all up in their sh!t :)

maribeth- I admire that you will get up early, go to spin class, and work your butt off with an instructor who uses crappy music.  I would not have the motivation you do to put up with it, you're so much tougher than I am.  I also meant to ask, how is the weight lifting going?  I know you were new to it, and it does take a while to see results, but how do you like it?  Can you tell a difference yet?

And of course, to all the other runner-knotties, thank you all so so so much for being supportive during my marathon endeavor.  I like that we can all be a sounding board for one another, bouncing ideas around and trading secrets.  You guys give great advice to people just starting out!

ok, end lovefest.  Have a good weekend Cool

If my H had to cook 24-7 all we would eat would be burgers, steak, pizza, french fries out of the bag, and beef jerky.  True story.  I'm surprised the man didn't have a cholesterol induced heart attack before I came around.

Aww.. Thanks!  I'm particularly proud of my latest post in the colonic thread  ;)
  • Hi, ladies!

I like this idea! The bell just rang to end the day and I am tired of staring at yearbook pages on my computer screen. I am submitting our final pages this weekend and will finally get to relax!

March has been a tough month for me, eating-wise. I've dropped almost 13 lbs and now fit into my wedding dress. Something in my brain must have clicked off. That was my main goal, and since I've met it, I'm having trouble staying on track. I've been exercising at least five days a week, but my eating has been off. I need to get back onto WW and track it.

I made those chocolate stout cupcakes with Bailey's cream cheese frosting from SkinnyTaste this past weekend. Only three were eaten before someone broke a wine glass on the snacks table and all the food had to be thrown away. :-( I was super sad because I spent a lot of money on the ingredients and time making them. The three people that got to eat one said they were delish, tho.

It's been beautiful here in Eastern PA and we've used the grill every night! I made grilled pizza on Tuesday. It was amazing.

Anna, I think I have the opposite problem as you do. I look in the mirror and see a hot, thin girl, like dayum, I look good. Meanwhile, my BMI is at like 33. And then I look at pictures and think, "oh......so THAT'S what I really look like. Dayum, girl, you are not hot and thin." I think it's called denial. haha.

Jude, congrats on your weight loss. 20 lbs is awesome!

Medi--another marathon?! I just read an article on the New York Times that says it takes the body almost one year to recover from a marathon. You go girl!

OK, that was long and now I need to pack up and hit the road. I have an hour commute, so this will be, as they say a P&R. TGIF!

  • Haha Medi, vendors on this board drive me particularly crazy.  I pretty much loathe anyone busting in here with a magic pill/drink/lotion and pretending to have discovered the secret to weight loss.

This boad has actually been one of the most instrumental things in my weight loss.  I found out about myfitnesspal and C25K on here.  And all the runners (lbarr, Medi, etc) have been really helpful especially when I was starting out.

Hey ladies!  This thread is exactly what I needed.  The gorgeous weather outside makes it very difficult to concentrate on the piles of work sitting here on my desk... so why not procrastinate on here?

I would absolutely LOVE to break out the grill, but we're in a condo that doesn't allow large grills - and any grilling we do needs to be so many feet from the building.  So, our grill is in storage.  We're planning on buying a house soon after we get married, and I'm definitely looking forward to having a place where we're free to do what we want, like grilling out!

I'm so jealous of those of you who do a lot of running, including marathons.  I used to run a lot and I loved it.  I was fast and it was easy for me to run a few miles.  Now, I run one lap around our neighborhood and I feel like I'm dying.  I don't really get it.  I have the endurance to do an hour of a workout like Insanity, but I can't run for 3 minutes without gasping for air.

  • We should do a chat thread more often.  I'm digging this.

So question:  Why are you really trying to lose weight/get fit?

The PC answer is "to get healthy and feel better about myself"

I suppose that's true, but I really want to not be the fat mom someday.  My other goal was to be able to buy clothes in regular shops most of the time.  I'm almost there.  I was able to buy new stuff without having a meltdown because they "don't carry obese sizes" (I was once told that at a store)
  • I love the idea of this thread!!

I know I don't post often on the accountability threads but I have been very good about my eating and my excercising as time allows. Mostly I go at working out and eating healthy on my own.  FI insists that he has to eat huge meals 3 times a day.  Although lately he is starting to realize that he needs to cut back.

I can not wait until I can do other things besides cardio.  I did somthing to my wrist back in December and felt something sharp for a few seconds on the palm side and it went away, but my wrist has not been the same.  Pain has subsided incredibly since and I can do most things but I get a dull ache when i move it in a few positions.  I have been to 3 different doctors and nothing...so frusterating and I have to wait until mid April to see a hand specialist. I think I could do some things but am scared that I will make it worse. I am an accounting manager during the day and am a visual manager nights/weekends so I am always using my hands as it is.

Summer feels like it is here already and I just pulled out our small portable grill today on my lunch hour to fire it up this weekend. We have a local 5K coming up on Easter weekend that I may sign up for.  Haven't decided yet.. I have never ran a race before and I don't know what to expect. I know I could do it because I my longest runs have been almost an hour on the treadmill but I have not ran alot outside.

Oh, One thing that I am really looking forward to is that FI and I are getting another dog!! Our wedding isn't until October but it is an early wedding present for the both of us.

Thank you everyone for always being so positive and motivating.

Sometimes you can't do anything.  Genetics can be strong.  That's what I think mine is.  I had a pretty darn high bad CHOL number and a really low good CHOL number about 3 months ago.  i'll retest at my next yearly physical to see if it changed.  i don't know if it will since I was already eating healthy and exercising for a few months at that point.

Besides adding exercise and not smoking, CHOL is either genetics or diet.  If it's diet, you're supposed to cut out heavy foods (creams, butters, eggs, ribeyes, bacon, sausage) and sub them for healthier options like oatmeal for breakfast, lean meats, butter and sugar alternatives, and up the good grains.
  • Good idea with the chat thread!

I'm getting excited for everything on my schedule in the next 3 months (I have 5 countdowns on my phone lol)! My last day at my current job is coming up in May, I also graduate college in May (first person in my family to do so) with a BS in Health Information Management. The wedding and honeymoon is in June and I also start my "big girl job" after the honeymoon.

Anna- I've been going to a personal trainer for 6 weeks now (two times a week). I cut out fast food and red meat on new years, but I haven't lost a single pound. I feel so much better and my clothes are fitting better. My boss even mentioned that I look thinner. At my trainer, we mainly focus on muscle building (I've only done cardio with him once). Could this be why I am not seeing any changes on the scale? It is so discouraging.

Totally could be.  Do self measurement or have your FI or trainer help you out.  Even though I'm not physically seeing changes I know they're there due to things like my pants fitting SO much better.  Maybe forget about the scale numbers for a while and just concentrate on measured numbers.  Like hips, upper arns, chest, and belly.
  • Wow, you ladies are all very inspiring!!  I love reading everyone's successes, struggles and plans.  It helps me realize I'm not alone in my own.

My initial motivation for losing weight was of course, I want to look good in my dress.  I want to feel good in my dress.  I don't want to worry on my wedding day that I'm going to look fat in my pictures later on.  Our wedding is a destination wedding, and I want to feel okay in a bathing suit without a cover-up - something I haven't felt since my very early 20s.

But as my journey has unfolded, I can say that I truly enjoy working out and I feel so much better.  I have more energy, I have more patience, and I am more focused at work.  My fiance and I get along better.  We do things together rather than falling on the couch & watching TV at the end of the day.  And, we have found a close circle of VERY supportive friends who have helped guide us on our fitness journey.  That has been the best part of this.  I didn't anticipate the "friends" who would begrudge us since we don't go out to the bars or restaurants as often as we used to.  So finding true friends who support & motivate us has been really gratifying.

My biggest success so far happened this week.  I am on a biz trip now, and had to go shopping for a few clothing items before I left.  When I started my journey I was barely squeezing into a size 16.  This week I bought 3 pairs of size 12 pants & jeans that FIT.  I seriously cried in the dressing room.  It was such motivation to keep working hard and eating healthy.

Thanks for starting this thread.  It is so nice to read others' stories.
  • I love this!  Good thinking, Anna.

I work out to be healthy (I really do--I have a pretty nasty family health history), and to look good naked.  I hope someday to get to the look good naked part ;)

I just put the finishing touches on my new workout schedule now that I'm retreating and regrouping from Insanity.  I'm pretty happy with it, but I wish my work schedule allowed me to space out my rest days a bit better.  Once summer comes, I should be able to do that better.

i'd be happy not having to suck it in when going through turnstiles.  But i have a feeling my butt is not going anywhere.
  • Yay, chat thread!  I am so late to the game, but was out for FI's surprise party this evening.  Is anyone still awake?  I'm now sitting in bed munching on frosted flakes after nachos for dinner--> diet fail

Anna-I love yard sale season!  We stocked most of our apartment from them last summer.  You can also ask bike stores where used ones are being sold - lots of them have insider tips.  Plus, if you're anywhere near a college, just wait for students to start selling them in the paper and on craigslist.  It can be a jackpot.

Jude- I've lost about 100 lbs at this point and still the same person.  It's only when I look at pictures that I know I don't look the same.  While I do not discount body dismorphia in the least, I don't think that's my issue.  I really think that it has more to do with how I feel about myself - I know I haven't changed at all on the inside, which makes me feel like, really, nothing has changed at all.  Instead, I focus on the small things, like having more energy to get up and do things, or making better food choices (minus right now), and be proud of those changes.

  • Mmmmmm.  Nachos and then Frosted Flakes...  pretty sure that was my main dinner from age 17-21  ;)
  • Yay chat thread! great idea anna :)

wow, congrats on all the weight loss ladies, that's fantastic!

tbh i'm with J&K on my weight loss goal: looking good naked. my wedding isn't for 15 months but eventually i'd like to looking banging in my wedding dress. in the past year i've lost about 20lbs but i don't weigh myself that often to really know - i use how i look & feel in clothes as my measure, not the # on the scale. i used to be an athlete (lax) in high school & some college, and it was easy to maintain my 'physique' (idk why but i don't like that word) then, but it's become increasingly difficult w/ working full time & doing a post-bac at night. this board has been really helpful in keeping me motivated :)
