Getting in Shape

Itchy Exercising

Hi All,
I'm new to the board. Wedding is still about 20 months off. BUT, I've found that when I exercise (indoors at a gym AND outdoors), my skin get so itchy. It's itchy to the point where I can't move. After about 10 minutes of jogging/power walking, it starts at the middle and moves out. By 15 minutes, it's getting hard not to scratch. 20 minutes in and I can't move. When I stop, my skin burns for 5-10 minutes and then I'm fine.
Does this happy to anyone else? What have you done to solve the problem. Any help would be most appreciated!

Thank you!

Jill

Re: Itchy Exercising

  • My first though is what time of material are you wearing while you work out? I have one certain pair of pants that make me super itchy once I start to sweat. If you are not wearing cotton, I would try switching to that. Other than that...I got nothing
  • Welcome! The most obvious question to me is: do you have dry skin? During winter when I have really dry skin, what you've described happens to me as I start to sweat and the dampness of evaporating sweat on dry skin makes me itchy. If there's a chance of that-just moisturize really well. Other than that, I'd suggest checking with a dermatologist. GL!

[QUOTE]Welcome! I would die if sweat made me itchy. I'm a sweaty beast when I'm working out. In addition to the things the other suggested, have you recently switched laundry detergent? Or are you wearing new workout clothes that haven't been washed yet? (I do it, so no judging from me)

    Oh gah, me too...
I've no idea about the itchiness though.. I usually do wear cotton stuff, so see if that helps?
  • That happened to me when I ran outdoors. I think it was my shorts. But when I would run, my thighs/glutes would get so itchy and red. I think it was the fabric of my shorts rubbing against my skin. Check the fabric you are wearing and go and see what is recommended. for exercise clothes

  • I believe it's recommended that you never wear cotton or other natural fibres when you're working out. It holds onto sweat, so you stay wet, and it can cause some really bad chafing.. I know when I started running I had runners in the streets stop me and tell me not to wear cotton while running (yes, that was wierd, but I live in a community where there are TONS of runners)..

  • I've heard the no cotton for running thing too. Especially, I think, for socks and shirts/tops.

  • Wow! Thanks for all the help, everyone!! :)
  • This happens to my sister as well. She went to the doctor and the itchiness has something to do with your blood vessels dilating when your blood pressure goes up from exercising. The only cure is to keep on exercising and eventually it will become less and less severe. GL!

  • I have the same thing and I read somewhere that it is from dilating blood vessels. I've read that you can rub vasoline on before exercising and that might help but I haven't tried it myself. Luckily mine is just in my legs. Hope this helps
  • I actually just read an article on this topic. Said that itchy skin during exercise happens because of blood vessel dilating. and it is actually very common.

  • I have the same problem, but just in my legs. I never knew what caused it but I just power through it and after stopping my walk to itch a few times, it eventually stops
