Getting in Shape

it hurts SO bad!

yesterday with the trainer we did these chin up/pull up things on a machine that sort of pushes up from the bottom while you pull up with your arms. It hurt yesterday but nothing more than the normal feels good soreness

Today I swam 1KM for my cardio since the gym was busy. Now, I can't extend my right arm without some serious pain. It hurts on the right outer side, just above and below my elbow crease.

I have this coctail party I HAVE to go to and I have no idea how i'm going to wash my hair let alone blow dry it.

This kind of pain normal? I took some advil and have been drinking lots of water, I did the hot tub after my swim but now I think I'm stiff?

Re: it hurts SO bad!

  • You probably strained a muscle in that arm. If that's what it is, it completely sucks but will go away in a few days. If you TORE a muscle, that will take a LOT longer to heal, unfortunately.. Neither require the doctore, just an antiinflammatory and lots of water/protein to help your bod heal itself.
    I'm sorry :(
  • Try lots of ice and elevation. Take it easy when you can and ake the advil. If it's not gone in a few days probably a good idea to get it checked out.

I hope it gets better soon!

  • The first time I did pull ups like that I definitely experienced a lot of pain that did effect my mobility, but it got much better after 2 days. If you've never worked those muscles before (and chances are, you haven't... since pull ups work a different set of muscles in a different way than most exercises) this kind of pain is actually expected.

If it's an all over pain, it's most likely just sore muscles from the work out. If there's a pinching pain that's more centralized you probably pulled something.
  • I wish I could swim but I can't

  • I get the same thing in my chest, it's an inflammed muscle. I usually take aspiring and then use heat on the area. And try to stay away from any foods that will make it worse, like coffee (unfortunately), refined sugar, red meat, alcohol...
  • Always ice new injuries, not heat. We are all quick to use heat because it feels so much better than cold ;) but the ice is best. Heat can actually make you stiffer. The rule for treating injuries is RICE. Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevation. I don't typically compress unless it is swelling a lot. Use the ice for 15-20 minutes on, 40 minutes off. Repeat a few times if you can. Don't put a bag of ice directly on the skin, cover with a cloth. And use anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen. If it persists, check with a doctor.

  • went to the gym as scheduled today, my trainer wasn't surprised, and I made it through my entire workout, even went up in weights for bicep and triceps today. Still pretty stiff now but at least I can straighten my arm now!

    Thanks ladies!
