Getting in Shape

Being Overweight & wearing skirts/dresses?

For those that are really overweight ( or were) Do you wear skirts/dresses? Do you wear long dresses/skirts? knee length? I would love to wear dresses & skirts but I feel self concious because my calves are big & I feel like people are staring at me legs. Any ideas?

I am watching what not to wear & see them putting dresses & skirts on overweight people and it doesnt look so bad so I dont know why I think it does.

I think you should wear whatever makes you feel fabulous! I'm not a big fan of my calves either, so I usually wear dresses/skirts with heels and make sure the hem cuts across my legs at a flattering point (aka not across the widest part of my calf). I do knee length because I'm short and anything longer tends to overpower me.

    Best of luck!
  • I love that show! Follow their advice if you do get skirts or dresses. Get an A-line skirt that comes away from the body that hits at or just below the knee. My FI loves it when I wear skirts/dresses, so I try as much as possible. I only have 1 dress that fits my current size though, so I wear it often. :)
  • I loved dress & still do -- to me the hide more flaws then jeans & a t-shirt. I carried alot of weight in my stomach & hips so I would buy dresses that covered that up.

  • Judging from the pic you have totally got an hourglass figure and you should be able to get away with all kinds of skirts.
  • Honestly, something I learned a while ago is that there really is no hiding who you are-and we shouldn't want to.  If you're a size 12, everyone knows that.  So wear what you like and feel comfortabe in and makes you feel confident.  If you feel confident, that will show more than your dress size.

  • I made myself a promise that when the time comes to go shopping for work clothes that fit, I would add more dresses & skirts. I'm not terribly thrilled with my legs, more because I think they're 'crooked', but I've come to the conclusion that since I'm an adult now I'm going to work with what I've got. I'm never going to have a model's long thin legs and no one is going to gawk or become nauseated at me in a dress because I don't.

I have a friend who is overweight, she is bigger than you, and she almost only wears dresses. I think you should wear what you are comfortable in though, and if you will be consumed with thoughts of people staring, you wont be comfortable.
  • I wear skirts in the summer a lot because I can never find shorts that fit right. I'm not sure why clothing designers think all women want a 2" inseam, but I sure don't.  I actually like my calves but HATE my upper legs, especially the part right above my knees, so I always wear skirts that are at least knee-length.

I totally agree that you should wear what you feel comfortable in, but also be aware of what looks best on your body type. For example, my butt is way too big for anything poufy, so straight, a-line skirts are best on me.
  • Thanks for all the good advice. I think next time I go clothes shopping that I will try an A-line skirt and see what I think about it. I do have one black dress that I absolutly LOVE. Although, its not the type to wear to work. Its a dressy dress that is made for formal dinners and stuff. I love it though, just hate wearing nylons which look better with that kind of dress. I think I will try a couple dresses on and see. It cant hurt and if I dont like them or dont feel comfortable then I can take them off and not buy them. I used to have jean skirts & loved them. I think I need to realize that I need to learn to be comfortable with the body I have. Not to keep waiting for the body I want.
