Getting in Shape

6 months and 20 lbs to go

I am getting married June 9th. Dress fittings will happen six weeks before that. I would like to lose roughly 20 lbs. Currently, I am 5'5" and weigh 145 pounds. This is the biggest I've ever been and I definitely don't want that to be the case on my wedding day. I started the Couch to 5K running program and after week 5 I saw no changes. So, I began to get a little discouraged. I also log my food in My Fitness Pal. I'm thinking of starting the 30 day shred with my Fiancee (he is wanting to lose 30 lbs). Does anyone have any suggestions??

  • What does a typical day look like for you, exercise, food, and calorie wise?  Typical meals?

A few different things could be happening.
    1.  You might be eating too much.  This could be because you're not logging accurately or it's not set at the right number of calories.
    2.  You  might be eating too little.  Many people think "if cutting some calories is good, cutting a LOT is better!"  Not true.  You never want to net less than 1200 a day.  Your body won't have enough fuel to run and will start holding onto everything desperately.
    3.  You could be eating the wrong things.  Nothing should be off limits, but the majority of your diet should be whole, real food, not processed stuff.  You need to make sure you're getting enough protein, fat, and GOOD carbs.  If you're eating the right number of calories, but feeding your body mostly junky carbs with not enough protein and fat, you're not going to use that fuel as efficiently.
    4.  You could potentially be having some health/medication/etc issues that are causing you to hold on to the weight.

  • I agree with everything J&K said. I was about the same size as you 6 months before my wedding, 5'5'' and 143. I tracked my calories, lifted weights, and changed my diet and ended up at 126. What really worked for me was eating more fat and protein and fewer carbs. And most of the carbs I ate (and eat now) come from fruit and vegetables. And when I say I started eating more fat I really mean it, about half of my calories come from fat now. It sounds crazy but eating more fat really helped me lose the weight.
  • I've started doing a couple of things differently to get in shape for my wedding:

    - Exercise before work - I have to get up early, but feel great after and it motivates me to eat good all day long because I've already worked out. (Side note: I hope in the shower after to rinse off but don't rewash my hair. I don't sweat too much, but just spray some dry shampoo - Suave is great - and quicklyblow dry my hair.)
    - Exercise at least 5 hours a week. This can be a simple walk. Just get moving.
    - Whenever I eat something whether it be a meal or a snack, I ALWAYS include a vegetable and/or fruit. Who knows, you may be full after a piece of fruit and skip the processed snack you were craving!

I hope this helps! I lost 30 pounds once (5'7 160lbs. before losing) in eight weeks by cutting out all processed foods (I was by no means starving myself) so it's definitely doable for you!

    Good luck!

I am feeling the same way. I have 5 months until my wedding and would love to lose about 20-25lbs. I joined WW in sept and have lost about 8lbs, but i just don't feel as motivated to go to the gym (I sprained my ankle and broke my elbow in October when I joined a womens basketball league to get in shape for the wedding, funny huh, lol)  So now that i just finised PT last week, I can get back to the gym, but I guess my worry is that i won't reach my goal. I would love to be around 125, which has been my goal for years, and I guess i just don't know how to get there and i'm worried I won't....time is ticking!
  • Hi guys! My wedding's also 6 months away (july) and I'm also looking to shed 20lbs. I'm 5'4, 146 lbs. I think a couple of us here are in the same height and weight range. My problem area is my arms, specifically the triceps and my thighs. Thankfully, I don't have a lot of belly fat. I'm also trying to tone a bit since the dress has thin spaghetti straps. I lost a lot of weight in Spinning classes (two years ago I was 165!) but after a while my body hit a plateau and I was stuck in the same weight for a while which could mean I need some tougher cardio and weight training to get those pesky 20 lbs. off.
