Getting in Shape

60 lbs in 16 months

Hi Everyone..

I'm getting married May 2011.. and I need to lose 60 more lbs. Not doctors orders, just a goal I have set for myself. I'm down 15 lbs so far. I've been overweight all my life and I'm just tired of it. I want this more than I've ever wanted anything.

I did WW two years ago, and it worked.. but I couldn't find the time to go to meetings so I eventually just gave up. I have all the materials, should I do it on my own? I have the free time and I get to the gym everyday, so I think i'm moving in the right direction. I'm staying positive.. I just need more motivation. If anyone has any suggestions or things that help them stay on track, let me know. Thank you so so much for any pointers.

  • If WW worked for you in the past and you just didn't have the opportunity to go to the meeting, then try WW online. I love it so far and it's super easy to follow.
Continue working out... cardio is the best for fat burn, but don't skip out on strength training, as the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn (or something like that).
I also recommend coming back to this board to get motivation, inspiration, and keep us posted on your progress. It's also a lot of fun to help other people and see how they are doing on their journey!

  • I think I will try WW again. It really was pretty easy. Thanks for the advice!!

  • 60 lbs is doable, but it takes work. Your body might not lose as quickly for periods of time or you might plateau so just remember to change up what youre eating and your work out routine regularly. I would strongly advise you to start doing HEAVY strength training, it makes a world of difference. I currently weigh 177lbs, but I am a size smaller than I was weighing the same weight a year and a half ago, largely in part to the strength training I do.
  • Thanks for the advice. I do an hour of cardio and an hour of weights etc. My trainer has told me that strength training is just as important. I'm still pretty new to it, but I feel like i'm progressing everyday.
    Thanks again!

I second this notion.  If you've found something that works for you, make it a habit.  One of my BMs just got back on WW too, she doesn't do the meetings or online motivation, but she uses the tricks.

You will plateau.  It's just reality - be it from burning fat and building muscle (because muscle does "weigh" more than fat - it's more dense) or from your body readjusting to a smaller weight, it will happen.  It's part of the process.

Strength training is magical.  On straight cardio I lost a lot, but wasn't meeting my health or fitness goals - I want to thin, but still healthy.  With strength training I was two sizes smaller at the same weight (but it is different for everybody).

I actually just met my overall weight loss goal (90 lbs!  Woo hoo!), and I'm training for my fitness goal, and scheduled to run my first 1/2 marathon this summer after my 3rd 5K this spring.  So, it's not just about the weight, it's about feeling good!

I had actually plateaued at 10 lbs. over my weight loss goal for 3 years.  I was happy with what I had lost, and have never felt so good!  (It took me a total of 5 years to lose all 90, which is a healthy time frame too)  Try not to get so focused on the weight loss that you lose out on feeling good about yourself.
  • 90 lbs.. WOW. Good for you! That's awesome. I honestly don't care so much about the number. It was just a goal I set for myself. I want to prove to myself that I can do it. If I could.. I would ignore the scale and just judge my weightloss based on the way I look and feel. But.. I want to keep weighing myself so I know when i'm doing something that works or doesn't work.

Thanks for all the advice. Congrats on your upcoming wedding!! =]
