Getting in Shape

Needing Some Ideas

I'm new to posting, so please keep that in mind.

I'm still 2yrs. away from my wedding, but I want to lose weight for health reasons as well. Without making a dramatic change to my schedule or diet does anybody have a simple solutions that work over time. I'm extremely busy and can't get to the gym anymore, and with the weather getting colder and dark earlier weekday workouts don't always feel like an option.

I've hit a rutt and could use some advice. Any takers?

Re: Needing Some Ideas

  • Drink more water, eat fresh fruits & veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins. Try the "Eat This, Not That" books for simple swaps to get you started on healthier eating. Try adding in an evening walk a couple of times a week, or walking during your lunch break. Also, try out some workout DVDs at home to get you started with exercise. "30 Day Shred" by Jillian Michaels is a good one to start.
  • What exactly do you mean by a dramatic change?
One thing I did when I lost weight was stopped eating after midnight (I was a college student). You could drink 1 beer rather than 2 or 3, etc. Do things in moderation and try and cut the calories in various ways such as changing from 2% milk to fat-free.

In the end, you aren't going to lose weight without some change to your eating and exercise habits.

  • If you want something bad enough, you always make time for it. You'll make time to go wedding dress shopping, right? And look at venues and talk to caterers and florists?

The biggest challenge is making eating right and exercising a priority, it gets easier once you get into the swing of things. Start small, maybe making sure you get a 10 minute workout in 3 times a week (sparkpeople.com workouts are really good for this, they're around 10 minutes long). Start choosing healthier snacks, or healthier ingredients, or like jonchrissy said make small reductions like changing from 2% to skim milk. Once you get those down you can ramp it up to longer workouts, more days a week, planning and making healthy meals, etc. Once you get consistent with these things, they won't seem so hard to fit in. And I don't know about you, but after I was consistent working out and eating better, I felt so much better and couldn't dream of going back!

    Good luck!

Ignore that advice. Cut out PROCESSED carbs. Your body needs carbs to survive.
  • I have found that just simply cutting back on portion size's at meals helped me out alot. I bought a small plate and used that for dinner. I hope that helps. It helped overtime but it sounds like you have some time.
  • I have cut out fast food (except when I go on trips) and am doing my very best to avoid overly processed foods. Also I slowly made my portion sizes smaller. I started eating breakfast again and noticed a difference in how my day goes. So far in one year I have dropped on pant size by doing only this.

Now I am starting to slowly add exercising to my routine. All I have been doing (because I have to) so far is walk the 10 minutes it takes to get to school. I just started kettle bell workouts.

  • Keep a food journel! Don't make any changes for the first week and just write down everything, including what you drink, and what time, just eat like you normally would. After the week is over look through your week and start making small adjustments based on what you notice your habits are. Keep up the journal, its a great way to hole yourself accountable.

    Greetings
I have been useing slimfast and over a span of 9 months with swimming laps i lost 50 lbs. The ywca (if you have one in your area) usually has a lap schedual this is a great way to loose weight and relax those muscles to also helps tone them as well. I have fibromyalgia and hypoglysemia (low bloodsuger) and so far the only way I can diet is to use slimfast. I put myself on 1300 cal which included the slimfast 2-3 cans and a liteballenced meal. my doctor was pleased with this plan but wanted to see me every month or 2 to be sure all was well. talk with your doc and see what he says. the slimfast they have now is much tastier than what it used to be. I hope this helps
Blessings on your wedding and day

  • If you have a sweet tooth that would definitely be your worst enemy.

  • Something I've found to help with the sweet tooth is mints.

York Mints have the new "bite size" mints -- they look like M & M's.  I get a bag of those and they last me FOREVER!!!  It satisfy's my sweet tooth -- but I don't want to CHOW DOWN on them (like I would with chocolate)

I was just recently given this tip -- so no reports on if it works -- or on actual weight loss...but I've GOT to satisfy that sweet tooth -- I'm not above going to the gas station for a candy bar :(

  • Well, to start things off I have 180 lbs to loose and ive already lost 56 of them. I did this by simply cutting calories. It really is easier than you think. These posts all have good advice, and if you can incorporate all of them then you'll be sitting pretty and thinner too :). Basically you have to burn more calories than you eat. Thats what it boils down to. I used to do weight watchers, and that worked really well for me, but then I went to college and could not afford the weekly dues. Overall the best thing that you can do is surround yourself with people that are going to help you. You don't want to walk outside? Walk inside up and down the stairs. Movement matters and I hope this has helped. :)

  • I am a college student in my last semester and I also work. My FI and I are planning a late May 2011 wedding so I am very busy. I understand not having enough time to add in exercise time, but if you really want to get in shape you can find at least 30 minutes a day to work out.

Since I couldn't find a lot of time either my FI has offered to help. We recently ordered the Insanity Workout it's a 60 day total body transformation that we are going to do together. I found that any extra time I had we were just sitting around watching tv. Instead we are now working out together to help motivate and encourage one another. The workout also comes with a nutritional guide that we are planning to follow as well.

  • Thank you everyone for you suggestions. My mom is on weight watchers so she's going to share her materials with me so that I can try doing that again. I've also started packing a lunch with me and am snacking on yogurt or fruit. My addiction for Reese's is proving to be very hard to break so I only let myself have 1 or 2 cups a day and I found a gym that's on my way to and from the office. My Godfather's wife is my new workout buddy and we are making plans to go to the gym for an hour 3 times a week (and the machines have tv's so we can still see our shows). I'll let you know how it works.
