FI and Workout Supplements

Ok girls, so my FI is trying to lose weight and has been hitting the workouts hard core.  He has been working out since Jan and has lost about 20 lbs. I know he uses protein powder/shakes, which I don't have a problem with, but he told he also got some pre and post workout supplements. I'm not sure which supplements he got, but  many of the products on bodybuilding look concerning to me with hormones and other chemicals that can be harmful.

Should I be concerned about him taking these or am I being too paranoid (I tend to do that sometimes...Undecided)?

Re: FI and Workout Supplements

  • The only "supplement" type thing I have is a drink mix. It's a powder you mix with water and has similar effects as gatorade/powerade without all the sugar (restoring electrolytes). It's supposed to be consumed within an hour of your workout. I also occasionally use protein powder.

Is he taking supplements like powder? Or are they pills?
  • I would find out what's in them before you get concerned. If it's just a multi-vitamin supplement, it's fine as long as it isn't exceeding the recommended daily upper intake of any of the components, particularly paying attention to fat-soluble vitamins. Taking more than one multi a day though is pretty useless. Your body can only absorb and use so much, and if you're eating a healthy diet to begin with, you shouldn't even need supplementation.

Now, if there's all kinds of weird plant extracts and things ending in -ephrine, -sone, or -globin, by all means freak out and tell him to stop taking them.

  • I would definitely talk to him about it. Isn't he in the military? Supplements and diet pills are kinda prevalent in the military. He may have gotten some bad advice. Just talk to him about what exactly he is taking and share your concerns.
