Size 10??!!

Wowza. That was a brutal slap to the ego when the seamstress took my measurements and said she'd be ordering a size 10. Admittedly I am about 5-10 lbs more well covered than I'd like to be, but I wear 4's and 6's (6 is on the big side).

Sigh...I have a lot of working out to do, especially as the seamstress mentioned that the sample size gave me back cleavage!

If you are talking about a wedding dress, the sizes of those are often much bigger than street clothes.  I wouldn't worry about the actual size that much.  I wear a 4/6 in street clothes and ordered a 10.

Don't sweat it at all.  Wedding sizes are WAY different from stands because standards have shifted throughout the year due to vanity sizing but the wedding industry maintained.  My size 2 bridesmaid had to order an 8 and was NOT pleased.

No matter the size:  If you look good.. you look good.  Don't worry about the numbers.

Yeah I'll probably have to be ordering a size 10 as well... maybe even 12...  Why can't they make wedding dresses smaller so the bride feels better about herself!

Yup, I'm a size 2 dress and I'm wearing a size 6 wedding dress. Ain't no thing.

Thank you Anna.  Seriously, I am size 10, 5'7" and 160 lbs.  Even when I was model thin at 125 lbs I was a size 8.

While wedding dresses do run small, just wanted to recommend considering having a seamstress you trust do you measurements and then ask to double check the size charts with what is being ordered for you if it is not too late (or advice for anyone who has not yet ordered). Most normal shops won't mind this once you've handed over your deposit. 

 My friend went to a shop where the owner would not let us look at the size chart which with thought was a bit sketchy, but they were the only place we had found the dress she loved so she ordered anyway. The owner only had a size 14 to try on and kept saying she needed 1 size smaller. I am doing her alternations and strongly suggested ordering the 10 and not the 12. The owner ordered the 12 anyway and as expected it's way too big so I have alot of sewing to do now.

This is SO true! I lost 35 pounds in two months, I went from a size 18 to a size 12, so when I went to try on dresses and they were putting me in size 20, I cried...  The only place that I know of that is true to street clothes size, is Davids Bridal!

I sew. Here is a pattern size chart that seems to be close to wedding dress sizes. I would be about a size 8/10 with measurements of 32-25-34. In stores, I am about a 00/0. It's just a number. I used to be a size 9/10 at 115 lbs. (I have wide hips). Hypothyroidism kicked my weight up to 220 while they were playing with my medications. Add I have a big bust so they wanted me to order a 22. I completely lost it. All my life I have had to buy an average 2 sizes bigger because of my bust in dresses, but to hear a 22 was crushing. So trust me, I understand.

I'm a size 10 who has flirted with an 8 for the past two years but I went into wedding dress shopping knowing I'd have to buy bigger.  I ordered a 12 and I'm perfectly confident I'll look AMAZING on my wedding day!

I find wedding dress sizes go up smaller than street sizes.  Instead of jumping up an inch they go up by 0.5 to give you that 'perfect fit'.  If this was case, I would love to see more size 7.5 or 11.5 instead of size 14.  I just didn't worry about the number.  As long as it fits, that is what is important.  No one is going to know the label size on your big day.

Thank you for this!!  I am a plus size bride.  Oddly my wedding dress is a smaller size than the clothes I actually wear.  It just goes to show that a number is just that..a number.  Would you rather wear your "street size" and look horrible, or order a "dress size" and look amazing.  If it really bothers you, cut the tags off of it so no one will ever know.  But you have to get over it.  The average size woman in this country is a 14...that means you are under that average...do you want a cookie?

Yeah I agree with everyone here.  In the past when I was a bridesmaid I always ordered a size 12 (to fit the hips) yet my bust was measuring an 8 so I had to get a lot taken in.  My wedding dress is a 12, it will probably be taken in to be a size 10 and in street clothes I am an 8 ordinarily. 

Formal dress sizes don't count for anything

And jsut reread your posting about the sample size giving you back cleavage.  Yup...go up a size.  You will probably drop the 5-10 lbs you mentioned before you get married, but just to be safe and sure, I'd go up one...they can always take it in

Sizes are just so arbitrary. Sizes have actually gotten bigger as time went on. A friend who is a 2 tried on a vintage dress of her mom's/grandma's (can't remember which) from the 50s and she could barely fit it in. It was marked size 8. She's still in really good shape and that doesn't change because the size of the dress changed. I am just as guilty of getting super excited when I can fit in a size smaller or sad when I have to go up in a pair of pants, but even just from store to store or dress to dress, all sizes are different. They really are JUST numbers. As long as it fits and you feel good in it, that's all that matters.

And I do agree that our society has started to value sickly skinny over healthy and curvy. I'm not saying that everyone thin looks sickly, but many celebs out there are so thin their RIBS are showing through their skin. To me, that's not healthy.

So now I'm starting to freak out. I ordered a size 10 wedding dress in August. At the time, the 12 fit almost perfectly (a little big in the shoulders) but I thought I could easily lose the 1.5 waist inches that I'd need to fit in the 10.

Normally I wear an 8 and in the last few months a couple 6s have made it into my closet. I've lost about an inch around my waist... but I'm panicking that the size 10 dress I ordered won't fit. I'm certainly not a 4/6 like bride2be062013!!

Since the dress won't come in for another couple months, I just have to stick with it and work that waist down a little more. Eek!

I went into the dress shop hearing that the sizes run usually one to two numbers bigger, I usually wear about an 8 but found a discontinued dress in an 8 that I loved when I tried it on.  I'll be losing a little around the middle before then, but I had to remember that I have hips, they don't go anywhere  I was able to get the dress zipped up, but for comfort I'm having the zipper taken out and putting a corset lacing back in. Don't sweat the numbers, just like other clothes, they seem to differ a little from brand to brand.  If you need to, cut the tag out with the number on it so you don't keep seeing it  You're getting your wedding dress! And you will look amazing, no matter what the number is
