Happy Weekend!

This is a P&R because our flight leaves at 11:30 and I'm not bringing my laptop.  I just wanted to say thanks for the love this week.  It really means a lot to me.

Re: Happy Weekend!

  • Have fun Amanda! Since you're leaving hopefully someone will come entertain me. I'm siting while the alarm guy gets it installed and such. I wish we had gotten the water turned on yesterday. Boo. Luckily there's a Valero and Kroger close.

  • I'm here! Eating breakfast with younger FSIL and her basketball team bc FI is the assistant coach and they've got a game at noon. Nothing like hanging out with cranky teenage girls first thing in the morning!

  • What's up! I just got back from Jazzercise, and buying new tennis shoes, which was my present to myself when I hit 10lbs lost. Today we're cleaning out the little guys room, he has more toys than he knows what to do with, and doesn't play with any of them. Good luck this weekend Amanda!
  • Turns out I'm stuck at the airport for another two hours. Andy and I are drAnkin'.

  • Happy drankin! I have been up since 7am with Bourbon needing out, then had gym and some early morning errands to run. I am watching this week's Grey's and getting in a nap before we start cleaning house, and putting together welcome bags.

Andalso, we found a house we're most likely putting an offer on today.

A German restaurant in Plano.  We were going for a more casual vibe since we prefer fun over formality (I know a more casual RD isn't for everyone, though).  They have great food, use quality ingredients, good prices, and they have a neat private room. :)  If you want more info, let me know and I can PM it to you!

Thanks, Ash!  I'm still in the "I-think-I-might-vomit-if-we-put-an-offer-down" phase.  This just makes me so incredibly anxious.  I'm an anxious person as it is, so I don't know whether to read it as a "bad gut feeling" or just my stupid nerves, lol.

I would be worried if you didn't have anxiety... big step!

And on the RD... since we're getting married on White Rock Lake, Plano is a little far, but that is sad because I LOVE German food. And it could be a nice farewell to my German last name....

The way I was able to separate out what was anxiety about a big step vs. the house itself was to think back to my feelings when I was actually IN the house. I remembered that every time I was in the house, it felt perfectly right and natural, and H and I had actually talked quietly while we were there and agreed it was worth the full asking price and we'd pay that if we had to. It was only afterward that I questioned myself.

But, we had 10 days to back out for any reason written into our contract (issues found during the inspection, etc), so I always kept that in the back of my mind. To me, it wasn't at all a done deal until those 10 days were up, AND after the appraisal came back as equal to or higher than our loan, etc. That helped me keep the nerves at bay.

Crash -- are you in your new house already? How exciting!

We did the same- we are having ours at the Londoner in uptown. Super casual but awesome view of downtown and we have the entire upstiars area of the restaurant- no charge. Congratulations! I think at this point I started to feel like everything was more real :)

Congrats Crash- I hope everything goes A-Ok with the offer! Hopefully they accept and you can start all the other fun stuff (inspections/appraisals/signing!)

FI and I met with Rubials this morning to plan our front yard and get an idea for what plants we are putting in! As much as I feel like an old person for saying this, I cannot wait to plant our garden!
  • cwaggoner -- That's right, I forgot you guys were at White Rock... oops!  Kuby's is in Snider Plaza and is amazing.  It's traditional German decor, awesome German food, and good beer.  I don't think they have a separate space though. :(  What kind of space/restaurant are you looking for?  We have gone to a lot of cool places in Dallas...maybe we can help you think of something you haven't yet come across!

MarieSD -- That was really helpful advice, thank you!  In the house it felt natural to me.  We were only there briefly today as it was the last house we were looking at before our realtor had to head quickly back to Dallas to meet with another client.  I did feel that while we were there and could imagine living in that space. We're talking to our realtor on the phone in a bit, but she did say back to me in e-mail that we do have 10 days to back out for any reason that will be written into the contract so that gives me some breathing space.  I just keep thinking about all the "what-ifs"... and that's what frightens me.  I just have to remember that no one can predict the future.

aeliza -- We love The Londoner!  And they are letting you use the whole upstairs for free?!  That.is.awesome.

It's too bad you were kind of rushed! For us, we saw a bunch of houses the first day, then the next day went back and saw the one we'd liked again. That second visit, we had a little more time to see everything in detail. And mostly to reaffirm that we were remembering that particular house correctly -- they all kind of blurred together after that first visit! I definitely would feel a little anxious making an offer if I only had that quick first impression to go on.

But, hopefully you have the same experience we did -- our first instinct was right on the money, and we're so happy with our house. Once in a while, I wonder if we should've spent more and gotten a larger house ... but then I remind myself that this size is more than we need right now, and will be perfectly fine for at least the next 5-7. Only in about 7 years, if we do have 2+ kids, it might start to feel a little cramped. And that's the break-even point where we might be able to resell and buy a bigger house, anyway.

I'm rambling, but hopefully you get the idea ... it's okay to have a little uncertainty when you think about all the what-ifs. As long as when you're in the house, you feel good. I believe my gut is more accurate than my head, because I tend to overthink way too much!

We closed yesterday. <div>Today we had our alarm installed and we were putting up blinds this evening. We won't move in with our stuff until next Friday. We are trying to push back on the sellers again though (flip company). They pushed back our closing because our stove was "on order". They put it in literally while we were signing the papers. We got there..and it's spray painted and it looks like it's two different ovens that they have put together. Which in my opinion violates the original contract...not that that's stopped them with the oven they put in before that either though.</div>

That's lame. :-/  Sorry you are having to deal with that.  The first has we looked at on Thursday was a flip house.  I'm not sure what made these people think they could successfully slip a house. There were so many things where you can tell the took the absolute cheapest, crappiest route to repair things.  It could have been a beautiful house.  Perhaps that's why it's been on and off the market for a long time...

I hope they do the right thing.  What recourse do you have now that you've closed?

YES! Buying a flip house with an FHA was a PITA. <div>

The pictures of the house were looked at were SO deceiving.  The cabinets looked brand new in the picture.  When we saw the house, they were the original 1960s cabinets that you can tell they did not sand down and proceeded to slap 3-4 thick coats of dark brown paint on them.  Most of them were hung incorrectly and half of them didn't have handles put back on them.  They also had cracked and broken old plastic light switch covers...... and all of this was in a kitchen with new granite countertops, double stainless steel ovens, stainless steel dishwasher, and new tile flooring.   Seriously?  Light covers are 46 cents.    Sanding down the cabinets or even buying cabinets from IKEA for this tiny kitchen would have hardly been an expense.  And the windows around the house were so old that you could push the glass out of the panes... but they had new carpet! .......

I hear you.  I figured at this point it would be difficult to get the stove corrected without taking some type of legal action, which is expensive and probably would cost more than buying a new oven. :-/  It really sucks that crappy people get away with stuff like that.

  • Yea. We went and priced some ovens yesterday. We'll probably keep the one that's there for a couple of months if they don't replace it.

Our agent thinks they'll say that "They replaced it with one of comperable quality" like we asked. I need to go through my inspection to see if there is a picture of the oven that was there...that was NOT spray painted.

  • Congrats on closing Crash! I hope things get resolved.

We are watching the Chelsea game this morning then organizing the house/painting our hideous yellow upstairs bedroom. I am so excited about not inducing vomit everytime I walk into the room.

As unamerican as this is, I am not much of a SuperBowl watcher. FI will probably go watch it with some friends (or here) but can think of so many other things my four hours could be spent doing.

Those cookies sound awesome CW. Everyone have a fun and safe SuperBowl watching!
