Help! In the process of losing weight, but don't want to keep paying for dress alterations

Okay, fellow brides I need your help.

I'm currenlty in the process of working out EVERYDAY. I'm doing the "Insanity" workout and it's kicking my butt. I haven't set a weight goal because if I do that, my mind will play psychological tricks on me, and I won't end up losing. haha!  however, I am seeing results with what I'm doing now. I'm going shopping for dresses on July 28th. This is going to be my first time trying on a wedding dress. If I find a dress that I like, I'm gonna get it right there, but depending on how it fits, I have to get it tailored. My question is.... do I continue with this crazy "insanity" workout, because I'm only gonna keep losing, and keep paying for alterations (which could get costly, and I don't want to do that) or do I stop working out as tough? Maybe three times a week instead of everyday. I don't really know what to do here, and my FI says "well do whatever you think is best" lol. Please help!

  • Well I would say cut back on the workouts.  You probably won't be able to start having it fitted right away since they have to order it and stuff normally.  I have no idea though.  Have fast have you been losing?

  • I haven't weighed myself. I hate the scale. But I do feel a difference in my clothes, and my family tells me they can see a difference also. I'm going to a bridal shop called "Davids Bridal" and they usually have dresses that you can buy "off the rack." If that is so, than wouldn't I be paying for alterations right then and there? Sorry, I'm such a rookie at all of this.

  • Alterations don't usually start until a month or two before your wedding

  • I have 3 months and 3 weeks until the big day. Couldn't you just imagine my stress right about now? lol.

  • If you're wedding is about 4 months away you have a good solid 2 months to continue losing before your dress would be altered. What is more important to you? Paying for alterations or getting healthy/fit and loving yhow you look on your wedding day? Answer that question and you have your answer on whether or not to work out to maintain your weight or to lose weight. For me, I'd rather pay more for alterations than not be happy with my body. I picked out my dress and then dropped 35 lbs and 4 clothes sizes after it was ordered. It is still in the process of being pretty signficantly altered. But that was the choice I made.

If you're looking to just maintain your weight for right now, maybe insanity isn't the way to go. You may want to consider other options for working out.

They have less of a selection normally if you buy it off the rack so you may not want to do that but seeing as you have such short time then you probably will have to.  Basically you would buy the size you need now or whatever and then you would schedule your first fitting for a month or two from now I'm thinking.

  • You are so right! Looking good in my wedding dress is REALLY important to me, and not to mention how many photos are gonna be taken. If I have to pay more for alterations, I'll just prepare myself to do that. Thank you!

  • Just see if you can talk to the seamstress or find one that is willing to wait to do your alterations in the last month. If you ask them to schedule you in now and just tell them that you want to wait, it should be totally do-able. Just get a size that fits you now. Alterations to make a dress smaller are much easier than alterations to make a dress bigger :)

  • Most likely since your buying off the racks the dress is going to need to be altered. No one is made perfectly to match all the dimensions in the dresses. We just got my moms dress this weekend and she measured a size 0 in the hips and 12 in the bust so obviously she has to get a 12 and have it really taken in at the hips.

Being healthy and working out in two months probably won't cause enough changes to need some drastic restructuring of the dress which is what gets costly. Taking in the sides a little becuase you lost some weight should be fairly inexpenisve as far as alterations go but definitely check with the store on what they think.

  • If you go to a local seamstress as opposed to DB for your alterations, you'll save some money and if you end up needing extra alterations it shouldn't be as expensive.

  • Thank you all! Your advice is great. I was beginning to stress, but not anymore :)

  • Definitely find an independent seamstress if you can. I ordered from David's, lost 30 and the dress was falling off. I continued to lose and my dress was being taken in again up until the week of the wedding. Also talk to the I store seamstress about how far you can take it in without ruining the dress design before you decide on a size to purchase. I ran into some problems with that and had to have another seam put into the gown to achieve the look it was supposed to have.
  • Okay, definitely will do this. Thank you :)

  • also, if you lose an insane amoutn of wait, davids will exchange your dress one time for a smaller size. i had the same concerns
  • My MOH is doing the insanity work out too! Our DB consultant told us that the dresses can be altered up to 40 lbs lost or 4 dress sizes (makes sense because the general rule is for every 10 lbs lost = ~1 pant size down). Definitely use an independent seamstress and not DB to save yourself some money. Keep up the good work! :-)
