Healthy (or healthier) Holiday Desserts

I've been asked to bring dessert for both my and DH's family's Thanksgivings.  I'm going to make this (pumpkin cheesecake) and I need another suggestion for something tasty but not so bad that if I have a few bites, I've consumed 20 g of fat.  Anyone have good recipes?

Re: Healthy (or healthier) Holiday Desserts

  • For Christmas dinner (I'm cooking) I am planning on making the health(ier) cheesecake recipe from my glycemic index cookbook.  But you're already making a cheesecake so I'm not sure how helpful that would be for you.

In the past I've also made fruit tarts with almond meal and whole wheat flour substituted for most of the flour in the crust.  Pastry cream isn't as bad as I had thought it was- it's rich because of the eggs but can be made with milk instead of cream so there's less fat.  It's really more of a custard than a cream.  Then fresh fruit of your choice on top.

  • That cheesecake sounds amazing! Thanks for the recipe. Sorry I don't have anything to help you!

  • These "Chocolate Cherry Heart Smart" cookies from Cooking Light are my new favorite! They are delicious, and only have 94 calories and 3.2 grams of fat per cookie. Compared to most holiday treats, that is great.

But best of all, they don't taste low fat or anything. They are definitely heartier because of the oatmeal, but I like oatmeal cookies. And the cherries and chocolate make a nice combo. I would make these even if I wasn't watching my calories, and I've had many people tell me how much they love them (who definitely are not dieting).

  • I like this apple crisp:

When I've made it I doubled the apples and used whole wheat flour (they have the flour with the apples, but its supposed to go in the topping). It doesn't have an awful lot of added sugar, and its mostly oats and apples - can't be too awful, right? :)
