Getting in Shape

sandwiches?

I'm fairly new to whole "weight loss/eating heatlhy" lifestyle, so I have a quick question.

yesterday, while shopping with my mom, we ate at Subway. We split a 6" sub (meaning, we each got 3" ) that was a turkey breast on wheat, no cheese, loads of veggies and spicy mustard. We drank water and did not eat chips.

Does this sound like a meal that would be somewhat healthy? I know that it's definitely not overly healthy by any means, but does it sound like something I might could eat again or should I cut it out completely?

TIA

Re: sandwiches?

  • When you say "healthy" do you mean "low-calorie"? It definitely sounds like not many calories. If that was my entire meal, I would get stabby. It doesn't seem like nearly enough food.

If by "healthy" you mean, like, wholesome, nutrient-dense, well-balanced: then I don't think it's as good. For one, Subway bread is total crap. Seriously, look at the ingredients of the bread some time. Pretty much zero whole-grain or fiber, and lots of weird stuff too. Lots of veggies is good, and lean proteins like turkey are good too (although I don't know the quality of their sandwich meats, honestly). But don't be afraid of a little fat! Fat is a necessary nutrient and too often people assume that it's evil and should be avoided.

So here's the thing: I love sandwiches. I have a sandwich for lunch pretty much every weekday because I love them. But you'd do better to make your own with good bread, lots of veggies, a little cheese or high quality mayo (I make my mayo, usually) and sandwich meat that is minimally processed. My very favorite thing ever is when we buy a fresh turkey breast and I roast it myself and slice it and use it for sandwiches all week. So good!
  • Most chain restaurants, and pretty much all fast food restaurants have their nutritional information online.  I am always looking up nutritional info so I can go into a restaurant prepared to get something healthy.  http://www.subway.com/applications/NutritionInfo/Files/NutritionValues.pdf

That seems like a really small lunch.  The whole sub would be around 300 calories or less depending on the kind of veggies you got on it, and you split it- which would put it at 150 a piece.  Turkey breast is usually the safest option at a sandwich place in terms of fat and calories.

Fast food isn't really healthy most of the time but most places have at least some sort of healthy options now.  Subway is definitely one of the best for healthy eating on the go.

Ditto everything here, especially the parts about it being not a lot of food.

I'll also reiterate that low calorie and healthful are horses of completely different colours.  Even Subway's "multigrain" bread is full of junk.

  • I'm the type of person who eats small meals throughout the day. I can't really hold that much food at once, so the lunch seemed a good size to me. I agree that making my own sandwich would be healthier, but we were absolutely starving and wouldn't be home for awhile! it's so hard to find restaurants that have nutritional food to eat, so Subway seemed like the healthiest choice. I know that next time I should be prepared and bring my own lunch so I won't feel guilty about eating something that is not as healthy as it should be.
  • All things considered, you could do much worse than Subway, but could still do better.  Even a grocery store w/ a salad bar would (or at least could) be better.

  • Personally, I prefer Chipotle if I need something fast. I'm a vegetarian, so I get a bowl with just a smidge of rice, then load up on black beans, fajita veggies, fresh salsa, guac, and lettuce. Fresh, nutrient-dense food that is filling and delicious.

If it's too much food, share a bowl or get it to go and put the leftovers in the fridge for later.

  • FI loves Subway's new breakfast sandwiches.  I didn't even know they served breakfast until he told me a couple weeks ago! The WW points aren't bad either.

  • Subway bread has a lot of carbs. I read that a 6 inch sub has 5 "servings" of bread. Too me, that is not worth it, so I don't eat it anymore. Although, I do agree with whomever said you could do a lot worse than Subway!
  • Subway is like 1 minute from my house, so I often eat it when I'm out. I know the bread is probably not the best, but I think the rest is okay...turkey, lettuce, olives, tomatoes, pickles, onions, banana peppers, black olives, light mayo, and mustard. I get a 6". I love Subway, and don't think I could ever give it up.

  • Do you know every sub that you order at subway can be made into a salad.  While that shredded lettuce may not be as good as a bowl full of spinach...its still a better option than bread.  I don't think you made a horrible choice...considering your options.  You could have went to Mcdonalds and you didn't. Thats a step in the right direction As long as you aren't eating half subway subs for everymeal and trying to do the weight loss thing " Jared style"  you did fine...but if that was your whole lunch it was a little small...I would have been starving in 5 min and I also eat small meals every 3-4 hours.

  • Would the flatbread be a better choice? I'm trying to loose a few before my wedding in July because my dress is a big snug. The dress is a size 4 Vera Wang. I've had 4 children (youngest being 2 yrs old) and apparently have picked up a bit during the winter..I'm only 107 lbs at about 4'10" so I'm trying to cut carbs so I can actually breathe in my gown. I'm not fat, just puggy in the stomach area :( I have been eating subway flatbread with chicken and lots of vegys for lunch most days or chicken salad salads from Potbelly's on a regular. Although I add extra chicken. I'm drinking green tea or coffee and no sodas or fruit drinks. I'm switching to just green tea and water. Any other suggestions?

  • Try snacking mid morning and afternoon on high-fiber, raw veggies.  Also watch your salt for a few weeks before the wedding.  You could drop a few pounds of water in a week by staying clear of really salty foods.
