Getting in Shape

Runners--need help with a 10k!!

Hi!!

Sooo I am totally not a runner (the most I've ever ran at once is a 5k) and my FI totally is! We are looking at signing up for a 10k, but I feel like it would be hard to train with him (as he is much taller and faster than me). Any advice for me?? I really don't like running, but I've refused to join a gym so I can save for our wedding. Any running advice ie...how to stick to a program would be much appreciated! Thanks!!!

  • You can go for your runs at the same time, which will help with motivation, but just each go at your own pace so you get the most out of your training.

Find an online training program, like Hal Higdon's, to have an idea of what you need to do to train for that distance.

But by all means sign up for it!  If you've run a 5k, with some training you'll be able to handle a 10k.

  • I was nervous when I started running with FI...like with you he is much taller and takes bigger strides but I actually found it to help me. Run small distances with him and see if you can find a pace that works for both of you.

We usually run on a pretty trail that is more or less a circle. When I was uncomfortable we'd just go opposite ways, give each other our high-fives when we passed each other and ran separate but "together". It worked well. When I got more comfortable running with him helped push me. I have to take more steps but I can actually keep a quicker pace than him..I beat him by like 30 seconds in our first 10K :)

Sign up for it! It's great to work toward races together.

  • Height really has nothing to do with it.  Taking longer strides will not make you go faster, actually the more times your foot hits the ground, the more you are propelled forward, and the faster you will go. Lots of elite runners are tall, yes but think of Jenny Barringer, she's about 5'4" and as quick as they come :)

Maybe you could figure out a way to make his easy/recovery days your hard/workout days.  The simplest way to get faster is to run faster at slightly shorter distances and run more miles.  Eventually running 3 miles at X pace will be easy and you will be able to maintain for 4 miles.

Find a local track and do a workout there, something like 800/1000/mile repeats.  You'll be together but like Acaponi said you'll still be doing your own thing at your own pace.

I know how you feel.  I'm pretty good for a woman, but even FI (who was pretty good for men) can beat me even when he is out of shape.  Some people can just do that.  Example he ran a 1:25 half marathon with two runs under his belt. Some of it is just the person, and some of it is that he's a guy, unfortunately.

If he's a pretty good runner he might be able to write out a plan for you, most runners who have had any coaching can, and he might be best to judge your strengths and weaknesses.  Best of luck.
  • Just get out there and push yourself.  If you feel like you're going to die, tell yourself just 5 more minutes.  Chances are, after that 5 minutes you'll still be able to go.  I went from being able to run/walk 1 mile to running the Chicago Half Marathon in 1:12 in under 6 months.  My other bit of advice would be to run in the morning before work/school.  It is soooo much easier to just get it out of the way.  When I used to run after work I would have NO motivation, plus in the summer it was so hot.

    Good luck!

  • Maybe see if there's a local running group. They usually break out by pace so you guys could go together but run with separate groups on your different levels.
  • My FI doesn't run at all, but my parents run a lot and my Dad is usually faster than Mom. The way they deal with it is if they want to run together, Dad will run with Mom for a little while, then run ahead for a few minutes then turn back and join her again. Or sometimes they'll start out the same, but they'll take different routes (his slightly longer) and they'll make it a race (not at race pace, just usual with a little extra motivation) to see if she can beat him to the rendezvous point.

    <div>Typo? Sorry, I have to ask lol</div>
  • How long would it take to train for a 5k?  I can do 45 mins cardio on the eliptical.  Running on the tredmil I get bored so I only do a mile or so ....
There is a 5k on St. PAttys Day....
