Weight gain after engagement?

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this and might have some advice. My fiance and I got engaged in August and since then, I've put on some poundage. Normally I am very good about watching what I eat but I have been going crazy and overeating all the time. I know part of it is that I am nervous and happy, which are two emotional triggers for me, but I wish I knew a way to stop myself! I started doing WW online, but can't seem to stick to the plan. We are getting married next August so I have time, I just feel very unmotivated right now.  Help !!!

Re: Weight gain after engagement?

  • I had that same problem too.

If you are able, I'd highly recommend trying to attend a WW meeting in your area.  When I first joined WW I was part of a group through my work and I found attending the meetings to be a huge motivator for me and kept me more accountable.  I don't think I could have been successful just doing the online WW (although I know many people are successful that way).  For me, I needed to go to the meetings.  I'm not sure if that's a possibility for you or not, but it sure helped me.

    Good luck!

  • Curbing emotional eating is a life skill.  For me, it's just as much of a life skill as communicating with DH, because if I stop, all hell breaks loose-I gain weight, I'm frustrated, I'm disappointed in myself, I have a poor body image and I get depressed.  So basically, you have to fight the good fight and figure it out, because life is always going to be stressful and hopefully, you'll be happy a lot.  So, as I often say to myself, stop eating your feelings!  Take a moment and think before you put something in your mouth-does this have anything, ANYTHING to do with nourishing your body?  If yes, go ahead and eat.  If it doesn't, find something else to do.  Easily said, super hard to do.  But be patient with yourself and keep trying.  It's a skill that takes time to develop.  (Says the girl who ate half a jar of Nutella after having a crappy day yesterday.)

  • Wow ladies, thank you so much for the advice. It was both funny (nutella lol!) and insightful. I am certainly going to go to a WW meeting in my area. I know it has helped me in the past and I would like to start again. I have to really start to think more instead of just doing (and by doing I mean eating half a box of cereal, which I did today AFTER I ate lunch). I guess it is an emotional thing for me to deal with too, and perhaps I can talk to someone about getting my emotions in check.

    Thanks again!!
  • Sometimes it feels comforting to eat and have a full belly.  Look up a recipe for baba ghannouj and hummus.  They are both very satisfying to dip raw veggies in (stoplight peppers, zuchinni, broccoli, califlower, celery, ect).  I find when I have these dips on hand, and I get muchy, I will sit and put away a pound of veggies.  You lose weight AND get the comfort of eating, eating, eating

  • You are not alone! I am also on WW (finally done losing, just maintaining!). I think the best way to stick to the plan is to do it with a friend. My mom and I have been doing it together for seven months and it is so much easier to have a WW buddy. We keep each other honest.  Good luck!
  • I do the meetings with WW, I could never do the online thing. I would try that. The group thing cost more, but I think it is worth it.
