Runners-Problems with Big Toe Nails

I hope this isn't TMI but here goes:

Both of my big toe nails have stopped growing. They have not needed a trim since early October (last time I trimmed them). All other nails are growing.

The base of my big toe nails (near the cuticle and above the joint) are red, painful, and one was infected.

I have been to 2 different podiatrist, one before the infection/pus and one after. The first one said to stop getting pedicures. Haven't had one since the summer. She ruled out ingrowns and fungus, because the nail looks healthy, no discoloration or peeling. This was in November.

The second podiatrist said it's because of my running shoes. He said they were too small and my nail/toe was hitting the edge/top of the shoe based on white lines/evidence of trauma to the nail. He also ruled out fungus, performed a minor procedure to drain the pus, and gave me an antibiotic. So I went and got fitted at a running store and dropped $150. The shoes are great, but my nails still aren't growing. This was all about a month ago.

Has anyone else experienced this? I don't get why my nails aren't growing. I asked him and he seemed to think it was NBD.

Re: Runners-Problems with Big Toe Nails

  • Mine have slowed significantly, but not completely stopped, and it was because of my running shoes.  I've even lost a few toenails thanks to running, and have found that many of my running co-workers experienced the same thing.  It can be the shoe, but it can also be how you run.  I started using really thick socks on cardio days for extra protection, and just tend to ignore it if it doesn't hurt.  When it starts to hurt, I switch to cycling or something for a bit, and that seems to do the trick.
    Good luck!

  • I did when I was training to do a mini-marathon (fail...btw)...I've been told that for running shoes, you actually need to get the size bigger for that exact reason

  • My big toenails haven't grown since I started running a few years ago.  I went to a podatrist as well.  No luck.  As long as it doesn't hurt, I just go with it.  I do buy a size up on my shoes now, but I think it might be too late for my toes!
