Getting in Shape

Ideas/best ways to lose 30-40 pounds in 5 months?

I haven't been active in a while, am working from home, while looking for a full time job, and my motivation is kinda shot because of the countless interviews I go on with no positive result.

Anyways, I am getting married June 5th and want to lost at LEAST 30 pounds....do any of you have any advice/programs/easy/cheap ways to go about jumpstarting a program?

Let me know! I have done WW before, and it works, gyms are a little too far from my area, but I have On Demand videos...just want to hear how motivation was found and what was one of the best programs and such that helped with the beginning point.

Thanks!

  • I hired a trainer the day after I got engaged! I know not everyone has the time or money, but I have 70lbs to loose so I needed the extra help.

But here's some free advice that my trainer has me do:
    5 small meals a day
only a handful of food each time
    no fruit after 1pm
    no carbs at night
no food 3 hours before bed

Its rough, but I have lost 16 lbs in 2 months so far.
Cardio burns fat the fastest, so don't worry about heading to a gym.
Just get a Heart rate monitor and workout for 30-60 minutes at your target heart rate

    GOOD LUCK!

  • Everything raynes said is correct but you can kick your butt in high gear pre-wedding.

I lost 40 lbs between March and Sept of this year (in prep for my wedding).

I did Atkins (low carb) and worked out 6 days a week- 3 days with an awesome personal trainer (plyometrics, krav maga/combat type training) and the other days I'd do Zumba, run, yoga, pilates, swim etc etc

It's do-able; assuming you've got it to lose.

  • We are date twins!!!! I am June 5th as well! Aside from that, keep doing your on-demand videos and maybe give WW another try! Good luck!
  • I agree that dieting, exercising and Weight Watcher are your best bets. However, a friend of mine got a prescription weight loss medicine from her doctor that helped her dropped 40 lbs in 3 months with no exercise. I don't know what the name of it is, and I have mixed feelings about rx weight loss drugs, but.... may be something you could chat with your doctor about.

  • No respectable doc will give you a Rx that makes you lose 40 lbs in 3 months with no working out unless you had like, dangerously high blood pressure beforehand and they put you on a prescrip diuretic that made you lose water weight.

  • Thank you all so much for the advice!

Unfortunately, I can't afford a trainer, but I will do my on-demand, eat the small meals (as I try and do anyways) and I ordered the 30 Day Shred by Jillian Michaels.

    Thanks again!
  • Next month i am also joining a boot camp program, I do not have the motivation to keep an excercise program at home, I am the type that need the peer support and accountability.  Maybe you could try that, that one I found is $286 and that runs 2x a week for 12 weeks.  I am looking to loose 30 lbs before June 11.
10lbs down already after 1 month of Jenny Craig.
    Good luck to you
  • A combination of cardio & heavy weight lifting is the key to trimming fat. And don't forget - abs are made in the kitchen. Start tracking your food on livestrong or thedailyplate, or join a program like weight watchers!
  • Go see your doctor and ask him/her if there is anything he can do to help. As for prescription wise be careful if you are losing more then 3 pounds a week. Might cause serious damage. Before you eat anything drink 3 glasses of water. Water will fill your stomach and prevent you from eatting to much and making you feel full faster (learned this in my phyisology class). Plus water will also help you lose weight. Keep away from red meats, some fish, and sweets which packs on the lbs and make your skin look great. However do treat yourself once a week with one of your fav. foods. Otherwise you might get tempted and overdulg yourelf (I know personally!). With a good diet and exercise you'll be fine. Do a mixture of different exercises so that you don't get board doing the same routine. Oh keep away from the fad diets or the prepackaged food that says it will help you lose weight. Once you stop you gain the pounds right back and more in a short amout of time! One of my two of bride's maids did this, and for one reason or another they stopped and gained more weight then they first started! Now struggling to get the weight back off. Plus it doesn't have all the nurishments your body needs no matter what they say (they are lieing). I know said be careful when you're losing more then 3lbs a week...but I know us brides get despirate when it comes to looking great in the dress. Try doing a body detox. You need to go on a strict diet for a week can you can lose up to 8-15 lbs in a week, helps with excerise. If you do go this route make sure you're drinking plenty of water and taking vitamins. Don't keep doing this, its something you can only do every 6 months. Plan to do it two or three weeks before your wedding. Hope this helps! Good luck with your wedding.

    Sorry I ment to say

23 pounds lost in 4 weeks!
Great program and if you follow it for a lifestyle change you will never put the way back on, I ordered the book and have been reading it while loosing weight and I am just so pleased it is easy and teaching me all the healthy habits I need to stick with it! Exercise is the last part of the program, since it is the least effective way of loosing weight but I look forward to it to help me tone up and look great in my wedding dress!
  • Especially with the new weight watchers changes, if you can afford it, that might be a great place to start for you. I don't do weight watchers (I have a personal trainer and nutritionist), I know having accountability (at least for me) is HUGE!

The 30 day shred should be a great place to start. I've also heard really good things about P90X for people who don't have a gym.
  • Congrats! Im getting married on June 18 and I am using the rpm system until then! It creates 3 custom workouts each week so its never the same workout and gives you nutrition goals to meet for 6 weeks at a time. Good luck!
  • There's this app called my fitness pal helps you keep track of your calories and gives you an idea of how many calories you should be eating in order to get to your goal. I found it super helpful & I've been able to loose weight by just counting my calories :)!

  • I LOVE the new WW changes, you might want to give it another go, especially if it's worked for you in the past.  I also love my OnDemand videos.  It's nice that I don't have to go anywhere, or go outside int he cold to work out.
