Close to giving up!

So I've been told its just in my genes to be overweight and I am close to just accepting this.I just dont hold myself accountable and I like food too much. I also work at a Harry and David and just have NO self control when it comes to sampling AHH, I have my first dress fitting in a week and I was really hoping to have lost weight by then and I am just not able to control myself.

I dont know how to do this, I run with my FI, about a mile is about all I can do and I know I dont do it often enough but after working 8 hrs and being on my feet I just have no energy. I think I need a personal trainer to just kick my a$$ someone who I dont feel comfortable saying no to :P

Re: Close to giving up!

  • Honestly, a PT won't make a difference if you aren't ready to make the change for yourself.  I'd encourage you to use MyFitnessPal for a week, and honestly track every calorie, to force yourself to come face to face with what all of those snacks/samples and 'liking food too much' are doing to you.  Once you see how much you've overshot your calories, calculate how many pounds that will be in one year, in five years, and ten years.  If that isn't a wake up call, I'm not sure if there's anything any of us can do to help, and I think a nutritionist/food therapist would be your best money spent at this point.

  • I couldn't agree more with Lobsters...
This is a lifestyle change.. If you're not ready for it, no one can kick your butt in gear. You have to be fed up with your lifestyle and ready for the change yourself.
A PT is great to give you new ideas and answer specific questions, not to suddenly motivate you into not sampling foods at work.

    We all love food.
    Food is amazing.
I'm sitting here stuffing my face with guacamole as I type this.. but I also made it myself so I know what's in it.. I'm also eating it with cucumbers.. and I also just got back from a three mile run.
You need to understand what you are putting in your body and how it's sabotaging a healthy lifestyle.
Living a healthy life and enjoying food is a fine balance we all struggle with.. Why do you think our country is so obese?!
Don't waste your money on a PT until you're habits are more in order so that it will truly benefit you.
  • Liking food is good! Don't use that as an excuse!

Think of food as fuel. That's the best advice that has ever been given to me. If running doesn't seem to be working for you try something else that you enjoy.

  • ^ so true.. i start eating like crap when I miss a few days at the gym.. the moment I get my butt back in gear at the gym, I get my butt back in gear diet wise.
  • If you don't want to run, you can find something else to do, but exercise is not essential for weight loss (however, it IS essential to an overall healthy lifestyle).  Hike, swim, play tennis, walk, lift weights, play at the park, anything that gets you moving and gets your heart rate up is good.

Track your food.  You don't need to never eat anything bad again, or only eat things you don't like, etc.  Healthy food can be delicious, and there should be room in any balanced eating plan for the things you love....in moderation.

  • I love the idea of using my fitness pal. It would be  great tool to start tracking your calories, etc. What would you think about maybe trying a 21 day nutrition/detox plan? The same people who made Insanity and p90x recently came out with a program that shows you how to cook really healthy meals, and you take several supplements a day to help you reset your body. I'm starting it in a couple weeks. If you want we can do it together! I'd really love the company :)

If you can afford a personal trainer, hire one.  I did and it was the best motivator ever.

I knew that every workout was a good one, every move was effective, and every exercise I did counted.  She also held me accountable to my diet.  I was pretty clueless about diet and exercise before her and would stand in the gym wondering what to do.  She pushed me beyond cardio into strength training.  In 8 weeks, my waist went from 29 to 25 inches and I lost 15 lbs.

Only for medical reasons would she let me say NO.  Otherwise, I had to do it.  She made me give up Starbucks.  She was on my butt until I did.  I paid her to do this.  She also gave me encouragement and congratulated me after every workout.

If you think about it, a personal trainer costs less than most wedding dresses.

I don't like MyFitnessPal because at my activity level it says that I need only 1450 calories/day.  What?  I burn 500-700 calories everyday working out.  I need WAY more than 1450.

I'm 100% for tracking food. When I gain weight I force myself to food diary. Why? Simple it makes me accountable for every bite and every calorie and it quickly melts off. I force myself to be accountable for my exercise and my food. I never allow myself beyond a certain weight before I start the "anal retentive journaling". I typically have to do this about every 24 months or so but in the end its kept my weight off for over 8 years.

You can lose the weight but its a lifestyle change. You have to be accountable for what your putting in and what you're burning. Find something you love doing and go do it that makes it a lot easier.

  • Not to discourage you, but running a mile burns about a hundred calories. While exercise is good, 100 calories every now and then isn't going to help you lose weight. You need to commit to a lifestyle change, not a cop out to "it's in my genes." It's not in your genes, you just haven't developed the self control you need yet.

  • I have always been heavy, and my wedding is not for two years, but what I do know is losing weight is about a lifestyle change I am doing WW and I also use MyFitnessPal and so far I have lost 6.3lbs. you and your FI  should try cooking together, and try something other than running.  But don't just use its in my genes, make an effort and really try. It took time and no self-control to gain weight , it will take time and self-control to lose it.

MFP is assuming you don't do any exercise. Since you burn 500-700 calories every day doing exercise, you can actually eat 1950 - 2150 calories. When you enter your exercise on MFP, it recalculates so you can eat those calories back. You'll see. It will put a little note at the bottom of your food diary that says, "You've earned 537 calories from exercise today," and your calorie total will change.

I agree with everyone about using my fitness pal. It is so easy to eat much, much more than you thought that you ate. Using MFP is such an eye opener. I use it on my iPhone, and I like that I can scan the barcodes of the food I eat, or quickly find the calorie counts of just about anything. As for a PT, I really think that it is only as effective as you make it be. I am incredibly motivated by my PT. He pushes me, challenges me, and makes me want to go further. One of my motivations not to eat bad stuff is that I know how hard you have to work to burn 300 calories. So when I see two cookies and realize that I could eat them in less than a minute, I seriously think about whether or not it is worth it. If you work out hard, you don't want to ruin it! Just my take on it. Also helpful is skinnytaste.com where you can get awesome recipes and know exactly ow much you are eating. I have made many, many of her recipes, and my fiancé asks me to repeat them. They do not taste "diet" at all. Best pepper steak recipe ever!

I work in a kitchen I know its hard. I go in at 5am and get out at 2pm sometimes later. After that my feet are killing me too. My FI doesn't get home till after 5, but we make and effort to go to the gym 5 days a week no matter what. And the temptation is hard, but it's all about self-control. Dont sample the choc and sweets, sample the fresh fruit you have a your disposal. Harry and David's offers healthy options so if you get tempted opt for that instead.
