Getting in Shape

Does anyone else feel this way??

Why is it that as soon as it gets really cold, I cannot control my eating!  It's like my body subconsciously takes over to try to "bulk up" for the winter.  For the past two days, I have not been able to control myself and have been eating anything and everything in my sight.   I also haven't worked out for about a week.   The cold NY winter has arrived and it makes me just want to eat and sit under a blanket. AHHH... how do I get my motivation back?  I keep telling myself that the wedding is 5 months away, but for some reason I can't stop!!!!

  • I feel the exact same way! It is frigid in Chicago and I haven't been to the gym. I just want to sit like you said, under a blanket. I crave so many carbs also! I am starting to freak out because my wedding is also a little more than 5 months away. Maybe we should just tell ourselves that working out will warm us up?
  • uhm.........YES!!!  i too have been feeling the winter food addiction here in Michigan (just ate fries and chicken fingers, thank you!).  Maybe I need to subconciously trick my body into warmer thoughts...what does everyone think about wearing a Snuggie all day? :)

  • I know I'm really strange, but during winter, I'm always at my thinnest.  I think it's because when I'm stuck inside I work out just to DO something and feel active.  When I workout more, I eat healthier.  I definitely eat more cold weather foods,  but soup can be really healthy and there's nothing wrong with whole wheat pasta in moderation.

  • Ya I know what you mean. I personally do not like to be thinner in the winter because I get so cold. The extra 5-7 lbs helps to keep me warm. I think when its cold its just natural to want to eat more and exercise less because it just so much harder to get outside. I have to force myself to work out these days. In the summer it is so much easier to slim down because I'm outside more often and I tend to eat less because it's so hot.

hahahaha LOVE that idea!!!  I really hate the winter, it depresses me, so that might be just another reason why my body craves food.. I think I am def. an emotional eater.

LittleKatie.. you are too much!  You work out more?  Good for you! :)  I wish I had that type of motivation.   And I def. laughed out loud to your "whole wheat pasta in moderation" comment.  I am Italian and eat pasta a lot!  No moderation for me... but I admire you for your will power!

  • I have a picture of my wedding dress on my phone so when ever i start craving anything bad i look at it and it keeps me going! I will also pull it up on my phone when im on the treadmill and im wanting to give up! Helps soooo much!
  • I seriously think that I work out most in the winter because it's the only time of day I'm actually warm.  It also totally helps with the winter blues/seasonal depression from the darkness.  Plus, if you work out, you'll probably eat better since you don't want to ruin all your hard work.

  • I feel all your pain! In the summer, I can run outside, I don' mind going outside to get to the gym, etc. Plus all the fruits and veggies that are in season are delicious! I crave carbs BADLY in the winter, any sort of comfort food. And it's hard to get to the gym when it's dark and cold at 5:00!

I've been trying to just drink a lot of water and do SOMETHING active at least five days a week to counteract any "indulgences" I may have. Just doing crunches or push ups during commercial breaks has helped as well.

  • Maybe get some good workout DVDs or find a routine you can do at home.  I definitely don't want to get out in the winter but I've been doing the EA Active on the Wii almost every day at home, and as Katie said you get nice and warm!

I've been giving into carb cravings a little bit... but I am trying to do it in moderation.  I also try to make things like brown rice which satisfy the carb craving but are still pretty good for you.

I am exactly the same way in the winter! I usually workout outside in the warmer months, so winter is always a hard transition. I really like the idea of thinking of working out as a way to get warm (MN is way too cold)! My Dad is a psychologist and every year he suggests using one of those seasonal affective disorder lamps starting in early fall, even before you start being really impacted by the reduced daylight. He actually gave me a little portable one for Christmas a while back, I just need to remember to consistently use it. I have a feeling if I used it every morning for about 20-30 minutes I would feel much better. Just a thought...

I have one that I use and it makes a HUGE difference in my mood and energy levels in the winter.  it's really great.

  • Part of the problem is that your body needs more energy from food in the winter, so you will tend to eat more, its just a matter of what you're feeding it!
I know the carbs are delicious, but try to get in some more veggies :)
