Getting in Shape

When do I weigh-in??

Hi ladies,

I've been hitting the gym pretty hard and eating right for the last month (a few bad days in between, but not really bad) - I'm trying to lose 15lbs (in 3-5 months)...and this board has really been helping with motivation! Thanks!!

My question is...when/how often should I weigh myself? I haven't weighed myself since I started to try and lose weight. I'm scared I haven't lost anything but I do feel slimmer and clothes fit better. I'm worried though that if I haven't lost much I will feel bad, but, on the other hand, if I am happy with what the scale shows I know what a boost it will be.

So, how often do you ladies weigh yourselves?

Thanks :)

Lots of people will tell you to only weigh in once a week, but I weigh in every morning. That way if I see things starting to creep up at all I know I have to adjust my eating/exercising for the next few days.

Also, don't completely rely on the scale - be sure to measure youself as well. I hit a two week plateau that was so frustrating until I measured myself and had lost 2 inches from my belly and hips. :-P When you're first starting out you will gain muscle, which may cause the number on the scale to go up a bit, but if your clothes are fitting better you know that you are losing!

Good luck with your goals, and keep up the good work! :)

  • Carlos, it depends how frequently I weigh in, at first it was only once a week, now its more like every other day. Even if you don't see a change in the scale, your definitely losing fat and gaining muscle. If you see that your clothes fit better, than you know your doing it right. Keep up the good work. I started dieting and exercising late february (11-12 weeks ago, 3 months) and have already lost 15 lbs. I have another 20 to lose by my october wedding. losing 15 lbs in 3-5 months is definitely achievable.

  • Thanks whitma87 as well!

It's good to hear that my goal is achievable! The really good thing that I have noticed is that it is becoming easier to say "no" to the bad stuff than before and make myself workout even if I really don't want to!

Good luck to everyone with their goals!

I try to only weigh myself once a week, Sunday mornings to be specific.  Otherwise I weigh myself too often.  I like beign able to step on the scale and see a real difference.  It makes me feel more accomplished in my weight loss.

  • Thanks PP! I think a week is good for me too, and I don't actually own scales so I can do it at my gym or at my friend's place weekly, rather than daily.

Thanks to all your ladies for your advice - I really appreciate it :)
