Trip Ideas

DH and I are looking for trip ideas for this year. We want to do a big trip before we start TTC. What places would you recommend or want to go to yourself?

New York City, anywhere in Europe, Tahiti, Fiji, Australia.

I can also say that going to Disney World without kids is pretty enjoyable too.

    Domestic or International?

Domestic: San Francisco + Wine Country is seriously my favorite trip ever

International: Tour of a few cities in Italy.... totally. I haven't been...but I really want to.

Ehhh...careful on this one. Be sure you do your research for out of country, some of those places are rough lol, especially Europe.

Rome was my favorite, and from there you can also hit Pisa, Tuscany and my ALL time favorite Cinque Terre. They are all pretty close to each other, and all very beautiful. If you stop ANYWHERE in Italy, be sure to get some Gelato :) (this country is my suggestion)

Paris is nice, I think everyone should go once in their life time; but I think it's a little overrated honestly, along with Venice. But that just IMO.

Austria is good for winter trips, it's absolutely gorgeous (very cold) but the winter sports are wonderful. And their castles are beyond beautiful.

England, is rainy, but the history and the culture is so much fun! And there's a ton to sight see.

Germany, the food is great, the weather is so so depending on the season, the people are wonderful, and there's a ton to do there as well.

We LOVED Rome. If you go, make sure to take a morning trip to Pompeii. It's so beautiful! However, you have to go through the Naples train station. Do not venture into Naples without a really awesome guide. It's the scariest city we went to in Europe, and we were there at noon.

London is also really, really fun.

Haha, i had a one week stay there. My brother was in the hospital. I didn't think it was TOO bad, but you definately need a good guide, actually you need one for most of Europe. Scariest place I saw was Slovakia and Dachau....yesh...lol

Did the packs of wilds dogs not freak you out?! Nathan clumsily walked into the middle of a pack and was lucky to not get hurt!

Actually we didn't see many "packs" in Naples...just a bunch of strays. But the Pompeii Ruins were FLOODED with them.

    Such as this: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2252/2065187595_decfc47792.jpg

I was really thinking Rome, but I was just worried about budget. We just like to get the most out of our vacation. I did hear about Naples, so I think we would stay clear.

Yeah, the dogs there just seemed further away from the people, so it wasn't as scary. Plus, it's so calm there and the views were breath taking - we were probably distracted. Also, we went in October 05, so things definitely could have changed.

You can cut down on budget easily. Italy, has a TON of food markets, usually in the mornings, depending on how long you plan on staying, I say hit those up for a couple days worth of snacks and small lunches. That way you can set aside money for dinner resturants. Also, if you venture onto the back streets, they usually have smaller resturants and the prices are ALOT lower than they are on the main streets, and after 11 months there, i never once found any resturant i didn't like. Also they have tons of little pizza places that are like "fast food" it's just literally a store you walk up to and talk to them through a empty "window" they hand you the food and you can eat it on the curb. It's much cheaper than a sit down place, and i LOVE italian pizza.

It's also cheaper if you can go in the spring, versus the summer and winter, because those are the higher tourist times. The main train station, Termini, has a TON of hotels around of all prices, we stayed in a Hostel. So the price was much cheaper, but we also had 8 people. So we had a room to ourselves, there are some convents as well, which are cheaper than a hotel. Usually hostels and convents have a curfew of about 10 o'clock though.

We didn't need a car, we practically walked everywhere. It's worth investing in a map, they usually point out the best places to hit :) and they are usually inexpensive if you buy them away from a major attraction, train stations are best :)

ETA: Here's the hostel we stayed at: Hostel des Artistes
    http://www.hostelrome.com/
It was about 20 euro a night, which comes out to in and around $30. You can walk from the train station to here, it's only about 5-10 minutes.

It's not a "hotel" though just remember that, no room service, and i think most of the rooms are bunk beds. BUT it's $30 a night....lol. And we spent our whole days out on the town, and only used the hostel to sleep at. So I guess it comes down to whether or not you're comfortable with the idea. But it's an option :)

Maui. I cannot wait to go again.

We are thinking of doing Europe in 2012 after my daughter's high school graduation. France and Italy for sure, maybe Spain.

We are looking at Rome for a week in late June (before it gets too hot) and we could go for about $3500 and stay at a nice looking hotel. Rick Steeve's books are by far the best with information. His Rome book is amazing! Rome doesn't have but two subway lines due to the ruins everywhere but their bus system is great.

I loved, loved, loved Venice. I enjoy Paris way more than London. $5-6 for a bottle of water or a soda is a bit much IMO.

Thanks I will have to check out that book. I think Italy or Paris is going to be the places to go. Stephanie, we went to Maui for our honeymoon and definitly would go back in a second. I loved Maui, so glad we stayed a long time.

Just chiming in to say thanks for the info on this thread! We're just starting to buckle down to plan our Italy honeymoon for this spring. Rome is definitely a contender, but $$$ is an issue. (I just picked up my first guide book, and the prices were very intimidating). I'll definitely be going to look for a Rick Steeves book!
