Getting in Shape

Nutrisystem

I am going to be starting Nutrisystem next week, does anyone have any experience with it and advice for me? I have tried many different diets, and have a lot of experience on Weight Watchers my mom is actually a WW leader but I thought it might actually be good for me to try something where I don't get to choose what I eat! Haha.

Re: Nutrisystem

  • It can be a good program as long as you actually work towards learning how to properly choose what you eat.  That's the tough part.  If you learn, then your chances of regaining post-program are much reduced as you will have the tools to continue a healthy lifestyle.

I work with someone that was on it for two months and lost 1lb - in the same time, I was exercising and watching what I ate, with the help of My Fitness Pal and lost 15lbs. Anyways, he's stopped doing it and has borrowed some of my workout tapes! lol

  • No experience here.. I don't "believe in" dieting.

But my advice: While you do this program, continue to educate yourself about good food choices and how to build portion control/will power.
Nutrisystem won't teach you that.. and that's why MANY people gain aaaaalll that weight back when they stop. YOu can't really do that program forever. At some point you're going to have to make your own food and hold yourself accountable.

GL op! Hope you get the results for with you're looking.
  • Thanks! I do KNOW how to eat and how to watch my portions and such...I just don't always do it! I was hoping that kick starting with nutrisystem would help my body remember what proper portion size FEELS like, because I am hoping then it will be easier to do it on my own because my body will be used to eating less? But maybe I am misleading myself? Haha. If I dont have success in my first month I'll probably just go back to WW...just want to try something new!

  • Maybe.. Maybe not. I definitely understand why you are trying this out.
Studies show that your stomach does stretch a little and shrink a little, based on how you eat. (ie, A person that eats three LARGE meals a day will stretch their stomach out more compared to that same  person eating  small bites, continually throughout the day).
This means that portion sizes getting bigger and bigger can stretch your stomach out a bit and make you FEEL like you need those bigger meals. When you start eating small meals again, while hungry and confused at first, it can shrink itself down to "original" size and you will not be as hungry nor will you want to eat as much as you once had.
BUT it's a slippery slope, and you will go back down that hill if you pick up old habits.

Sure we all know HOW to eat and watch our portions, but the issue is that many of us don't. I don't think this program will help you fix that if you can't fix the underlying problem that is solely YOU already. That's why food tracking has helped me be so awesome with my healthy diet. However, we all have our own motivations and things that kick us into gear. I hope you find what you're looking for and it works out!
  • Hi I dont know if you have started that Nutrisystem or not yet but if so how are you liking it? I have a program that I am in called the Body By VI 90 day challenge and I drink two shakes many different flavors a day and I am losing about a lb a day! IF you would like some information on this get in touch with me. I have a website of my own for it. http://jenbricker.myvi.net or you can email me at jenbricker02@yahoo.com or even call or text me. 989-745-2150. The best part about this program is you can get your product FREE every month. What is better then losing weight for free?
  • I was on Nutrisystem last year and lost 25 pounds. I've kept it off for over a year now. Even though I know how to eat well and portion size, exercise and all that, this is the first and only program I have ever had success with. I cannot say enough good things about it. It's more than just teaching portion size, but you also eating the "right" foods in the right amounts (for example need to add fruits, vegtables, and the right proteins). I was only going to try it for a month because I didn't really believe it was going to work. I lost 2.6 pounds just in the first week! I met a lot of women on the NS boards as well and I HIGHLY recommend joining an online community if you are going to do it. It was definitely the secret to my success. Hope that helps!
  • I will have to disagree with a PP that Nutrisystem doesn't teach you portion control.

I was on NS for 5 months and lost 26 pounds. It is wonderful. It did teach me portion control, how to eat out at restaraunts, and good food choices. I eat a salad with every meal, know which vegetables are starchy vs non-starchy, and I even saved the containers from NS so I can portion control my food.

I strongly recommend the program and believe in it. You do have to exercise while on it or you will platteau. This a great program, and you will see results from it. Give it a go! It's worth it!
