What did you do with your dress?

My grandmother and I have been going back and forth on this topic... keep your dress, or sell it?  I don't honestly think that my daughter is ever going to wear my dress or that it will even be in style when she gets married.  I figure I'd rather let someone buy it after I'm done with it and let it get good use.  My grandmother is very anti selling the dress!

I've seen the trash the dress thing, but I just can't bring myself to do it.  It makes me sad for the dresses!! :)

So, what did you? Sell it? Or keep it?

Where did you sell it at?

Mine is in a heap in my closet.  At some point, I will get it cleaned and then decide.

I would recommend not worrying about it at this point and here is why:  when I bought my dress, it was not an emotional big thing for me like it is with most brides.  But now, I don't want to part with it, nor my veil, and I have no idea why, except to say it IS an emotional thing to me now.  Wait and see how you feel after the wedding.

There is a rather new consignment store that I am thinking of looking into if I go that route:  http://www.penelopesbridal.com/

I got mine cleaned and preserved, but it is also sitting in my closet in a box.  I have contemplated getting more pictures done with the dress (not necessarily TTD), but I came up with that idea after I had it cleaned and preserved.  Genius, I know.

I'm 99.9% sure I will never sell it or do anything else with it.  I doubt I would even want to use parts of it to make a baptismal gown or anything like that for my kids.  I'm just weirdly emotional about it like that.  The veil I could probably part ways with, but I doubt I will really make the effort.

I'm trying to sell mine.  I'd rather give someone else the chance to feel amazing in it, than keep it for myself (and space is at a premium).

Stephie- thanks for the idea of the bridal shop.

aphitx - Where are you currently trying to sell it?  Do you use Craigslist, ebay, a wedding website?

I'll be selling mine--then I wont feel so bad about spending so much on it! I know my children will never wear it, and we wont have the room either. I love my dress, but I don't see the point of letting it sit in the attic for years just so my daughters can try it on someday. I'd rather have the $600-800!

I'm keeping mine and having it preserved.  I really need to do that soon.

recycledbride.com looks promising--it looks that that consignment store will leave you with very little $$$ in the end

I am not going to sell it, trash it, or expect any potential children to wear it. I will probably just clean and put it back in the closet and have the peace of mind that I still have it with me... I am very sentimental like that and get attached to my belongings.. not a hoarder by any means :) but just like to keep the things that mean a lot to me. :)

I plan on selling it once I get it cleaned but I read the comments first and I totally forgot about TTD. That sounds fun! I didn't spend that much on my dress so I may not miss the money. We will see.

SoonToBeMrsHoz - LOL!  Thank you!! Yours are beautiful as well.  I used to get the Britney Spears comparison all the time... still do sometimes, but not as much with the natural brown hair that I'm sporting now.  :)  I almost went back blonde a few weeks ago for the summer!  Atleast she was fun, cute Britney back then, not the crazy, shaved head one! :)

tnickel06  - Do you  mind me asking where you got your dress from and what the style and designer are?  I love the lace and the sash on it... it's almost exactly what I'm looking for!

I have tried on Craigslist and posted it on 1-2 wedding websites.  I may try http://www.penelopesbridal.com/ .

    Not sure....

After reading everyone's comments, I am back to wanting to sell my dress, but I need to get it cleaned first. Any tips on where I could get it done for a decent price. And also, how do you go about choosing a price to sell the dress? Including alterations, my dress was about $1100. What would be a good price to sell it for?

I do not plan on selling/donating mine for a couple of reasons: First, I am 4'11" and vergining on plus-size. I doubt anyone else will be able to wear it once I've had it altered. Second, my dress has small organza flowers sewn all over it. I have a feeling a number of those will fall off the day of the wedding and, again, I doubt anyone will want it after that. Third, I have several ideas for TTD and my FI is a photographer, so I'm going to get as many cool pictures out of it as I can. Who knows what kind of shape it will be in after that!

Marlene, Mariah usually recommends Dallas One cleaners on Garland Road for dress cleaning.  I plan to go at some point!  :)

I to will be selling mine. Instead of keeping my dress I will be keeping and hopefully perserving my hairpiece and a hanky for my daughter(s). The memories will be in the pictures, and to be honest who really wears the dress their mother kept from years ago?
I will try on the wedding websites and possibly CL but I am kind of nervous about that.

Thanks for the cleaner rec Stephie. I have it hanging in my closet and need to take it somewhere tomorrow. I have been debating as well. I don't want to preserve it so I am probably going to sell it. but, it seems like it's really expensive to clean and mine wasn't all that much in the first place so I wonder if it will even be worth it. But I just loved it and if someone else can enjoy it, I will be happy to sell it.  I used to be super sentimental about stuff like that and for some reason, I am not anymore.
