Pre-Work Out snack

what is the best thing to eat prior to a work out?? I usually work out at 5:30am during the weekdays and I have a trainer I meet with twice a week and I nearly passed out this past Thursday when I met with him. I had a whole grain 100-cal english muffin, 1 tbsp low sodium natural peanut butter and a medium banana prior to going.. felt super full, and then 40min into the work out almost hit the floor. he made me eat chocolate!!!!  any tips of a long last snack/meal to eat before i go??

Re: Pre-Work Out snack

  • I usually eat pretty much the same thing as you before I meet with my trainer to work out. We take several water breaks in the middle of training. Another thing that helps is to try not to hold my breath while working out and doing strenuous workouts, I was doing that at first when I would meet with my trainer and he noticed it and told me I would pass out if I continued to hold my breath. Before I go I usually have a English muffin with PB and jelly, I figure my sugar is a little low in the morning so the jelly is only okay ;). I also try to drink a tall glass of water before I go as well.
  • Yikes that sounds a little crazy!  I like Luna Bars (Oatmeal Cookie or something is my fave)--I can have one before long runs (anywhere from 8-20 miles) and be ok.  However, on longer runs (or long workouts at the gym), I'll take a "Gu" or gel pack.  They have caffeine, sugar, and electrolytes which really help keep you from bonking.
  • Make sure you're eating something with protein prior to your early morning workouts!  If you don't your body is much more likely to burn less calories as it goes into "conservation mode!"

I prefer chocolate whey protein shakes before my intense workouts and long runs.  There has also been research suggesting whey protein before workouts increases calorie burn and decreases muscle soreness after.

We buy our protein powder from Costco - huge bag for about $38!

  • I eat a bowl of oat meal.
  • Protein shake!! 1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder (I use Jillian Michael's from Walmart) 1 cup milk (I use coconut/almond milk from walmart SILK brand) and 1 cup frozen strawberries or other frozen fruit. You'll be good to go! :)
