Tell me...

What were some of the most well-received dishes/items that you served at your reception dinner?

We have our group tasting this week with the June brides (I wasn't able to make it in March to taste with the May brides) and have to decide on a menu ASAP.  I have no idea where to begin!  We now have more money to spend on food since we will be having significantly less or no alcohol at all.

We're doing a buffet and not a seated dinner.

Any and all suggestions are welcome!!!

Re: Tell me...

  • Do you know what your options are yet?
  • Our Mac and cheese bar was popular...yummy!!
  • At my wedding, I remember having chicken, beef skewers, mashed potatoes, salad with nuts and craisens or something similar, veggies, and rolls on our buffet. I'd wanted kind of "comfort food." The chicken was dry, sadly, so it was a good thing we'd added the beef skewers at the last minute (although it added like $10/pp to the cost!!!). If you do chicken, make sure it's got some kind of sauce on it to make SURE it doesn't dry out on the buffet. The mashed potatoes were delicious. I didn't hear what anyone else thought of the food, though.

At a friend's wedding, she had pork chops with something inside them and rice with craisens/cranberries or something mixed in it. It was almost the most delicious thing I've ever eaten. I was shocked, since I never go to a wedding expecting that much. Sadly, that was a wedding (and caterer) in Wisconsin, so I couldn't have them do my own wedding.
  • I have such weird tastes, that my favorite things to eat are VERY polarizing. Sadly, when I go to a wedding it's usually safe food that everyone will like.
Comfort foods tend to go over really well, like the mac and cheese mentioned.

If my wedding was just to feed me, we would be having raw oyesters, hearts of palm, rhubard, etc. But I love my friends and family too much to make them eat things that I love.
  • Hands down, risotto bar. People told us they had seconds of it instead of dessert. We also added chicken fingers at the last second and I was surprised at how happy I was with that choice.

Cityplace offered a tuna tataki station that was good, but we decided against because we figured hardly anyone would eat it.

  • One of the other things we did that was very popular were sliders. We did them as a late night pass, but of we had a lot of drinkers. Also, during our cocktail hour we had tomotato basil soup with grilled cheese wedges, and that was awesome!!
  • Julie -- Our options are pretty much wide open.  Reflections apparently has really great food and they'll make absolutely anything we want, essentially.  Of course the price on everything varies.

Mmm, risotto, mac n cheese.... sounds delicious!  What were the "options" on these?  Risotto I can see because you have the different types of risotto, but mac n cheese... what were the different flavor choices or add-ins?

cwaggoner -- My family is FULL of picky eaters.  I used to be far more picky than I am now, but I've gotten a lot better.  I won't eat seafood though.  We're definitely going to have one chicken dish because it gets us a free side with it, but it will have sauce on it for sure.

Didn't everyone who went to Courstki's wedding talk about some sort of raspberry chipotle app or entree?  I can't remember what it was.

  • We had three types: saffron squash, asiago/spinach, and lobster. Drooooool. Most mac and cheese bars I've seen have gourmet mac n' cheese with a variety of toppings.

  • Hmmm, well, most of our guests really enjoyed the beef tenderloin medallions, the breaded mozzarella bites, and the salmon.  But we also had ours at a specific restaurant so the food would probably be different, but those things were enjoyed.

I did enjoy the risotto bar and the chicken fingers at Amanda's wedding though.

Wendi had a soup station at her wedding too and it was delicious as well.

Ilike Caesar salads with more of an oil based dressing, I love crab cakes (and I didn't get one at Wendi's wedding), and non-strawberry flavored wedding cake (my family has allergies and I just avoid strawberries for the most part due to that).

I hope you enjoy the tasting.  To me, that's one of the best parts!!!!!
  • The potato martini bar was my favorite thing. Besides the cake.
  • Ditto the Mashed Potato Bar.

Also, our chicken had an amazing lemon caper sauce. We also added a grilled vegetable platter to our buffet and it was a big hit! I just felt like we needed more vegetables--and it was a great choice!

I loved our mini crab cake apps. Yum.

Most talked about item of the night that the caterer created was passed Godiva shooters with whipped cream and a dusting of pistachio. What can I say--my family & friends love booze.
