Is being sore good?

I started Ripped in 30 on Monday, and today and yesterday I've very literally been barely able to walk (FI thinks it's hilarious watching me hobble around).

Now, I'm not new to Jillian Michaels, having done 30DS twice before. I just took a week off (week and a half) for the holidays before getting back into it Monday. But SWEET BABY JESUS! I am so sore! And in places I've never been sore before, like the back of my legs, and the back of my knees.

Even when I was doing 30DS, I would occasionally have some soreness in my thighs or booty, from squats I'm assuming, but it would usually just be in one leg. This leads me to believe I perhaps strained myself, or as working one leg harder than the other.

So, how much soreness do you think is normal? Is it good to be sore (I can always tell I've had a good workout!) or not so good (it really does hurt...)?

Re: Is being sore good?

  • Does the soreness feel different than when you are normally sore? If you are truly in pain, then I would say to take a break, but if you are just really sore, working out can actually help to loosen the muscles.

  • Being sore is fine. Just remember there is a difference between being sore and "oh my that's a sharp pain and I think I pulled something" type pain.

You'll be really sore, especially in the beginning. Lots of stretching, before and after. Also be careful of temperture this time of year. If you do a nice work out and then head outside when it's 20 degrees out your muscles are going to tighten up significantly.

  • Soreness is good, but it's also your body's way of telling you to give it a little time to heal.

I'm sure you know this, but when you work out, you actually strengthen your muscles by ripping them apart.  They get bigger or more well-defined when your body stitches them back together.

It's important to let that repair happen before you work out that particular muscle group again.  So yeah, soreness is good because it means you've accomplished something, but don't work out a muscle that's already sore.  Give it a couple days and focus on another part of your body.

<div>I laughed a little when I read this. I think it was in the 80s here today, I don't think we've been/will be below 50 this winter, so no danger of that!</div><div>
</div><div>I think it's just normal soreness, it doesn't feel like I pulled anything. Just gotta push through I guess, until it doesn't hurt anymore! Thanks everyone!</div>

  • Sore is ok... but you shouldn't be super sore for more than a day or two.

If you want to help with the soreness, do an epsom salt bath.

Even better do whats called a "contrast".... fill up the bathtub with the epsom salt bath as hot as you can stand it.  Then also run a cold shower.  Start in the bath for 30-60 seconds, then jump out and get in the cold shower for 30-60 seconds.  Repeat 3-5 times.  It's hellish when you do it... but you won't be limping around the house anymore.  :-)

  • I had a personal train for a while and he was very hardcore. After the second day working with him I could barely walk. But I came back the next day. He told me it was a good thing. And you need to push through the soreness otherwise if you rest a week you'll just be sore when you start back up again. I agree and take a bath, ibprofen and stretching very well. Keep working out but alternate your muscle groups from day to day. That way you're still getting workouts in but giving certain muscle groups time to heal while you work on others. Don't give up. Soreness sucks but its a good thing. Just make sure its soreness and not a strain muscle. Keep up the good work!
