the I do's

Ok, so we want to write our own vows, but we also what the minister to ask us if we take each other?  Can we do both?  And if so, which comes first?

Re: the I do's

  • The "do you take so and so to be your lawfully wedded wife yadda yadda" part is actually called the Declaration of Intent - it's you and your spouse-to-be affirming that it is your intention to marry each other, and that you are doing so voluntarily (not being forced into it, that sort of thing). The vows are different; they are a series of formalized promises of what you intend to do for one another in your marriage. Since they are two different things, you can definitely do both. Our declaration of intent came before our vows, and I think it flows better that way.

  • In our catholic ceremony the vows I,_____ take you______ in sickness health, better worst, richer poorer blah blah blah Can be replaced by the "I do's" it's basically the same wording but instead of us saying I take you, it's the priest saying do you take him/her.
