Wedding Wednesday

I found this creative way to avoid a recieving line in the blogs today. How do ya'll feel about recieving lines? How do you intend to embrace or escape them during your day?

ETA: I don't personally think the linked idea is the greatest -- unless you have a timer or something on the table, you would never be able to get up and enjoy the party!

Re: Wedding Wednesday

  • The idea in your link is a cute idea. It wouldn't work for us because we are not doing a traditional head table, but for someone who is, its definitely cute.

We are doing a receiving line at the Reception Venue when we arrive. Our Guests will be in the cocktail lounge for cocktails and when we arrive we will be standing in between the cocktail room & the dinning room. Guests who wish to stop and stay hello are then welcome to do so, however, on the flip side, should quests not want to participate in the receiving line, they are more than welcome to bypass and straight into the dining room.

I'm doing the recieveing line in hopes to say "Hi, Thanks for coming" to as many people as possible, so that later in the evening I can enjoy the party rather than worrying about making sure I've said hello to everyone.

  • We aren't doing a receiving line but we will hopefully talk to everyone during our cocktail hour and then go to the tables of people we have missed before dinner is served!  But your idea is cute!
  • I actually conisdered having a couple of "spare" chairs across from  us so people can come and say hi if they would like, I havent talked to FI about it yet. As for recieving line I havent even thought about that. We will be having to ceremonies that day, first the church ceremony, then we are having lunch at the hotel with all the guests, then a civil ceremony in the garden, then we are having dinner.. Not sure when we could "squeeze" in a recieving line.
However as all our guests are staying with us at the same hotel from friday til sunday I think we will be able to talk to everyone at one point or another so maybe we can drop the whole thing...
  • We're doing table visits.  Because our reception is on a boat, everyone will leave at the same time so we'll probably say goodbye to everyone as they are getting off the boat.
  • We won't be doing a recieving line either.  Having the ceremony outside will make this difficult as well as in our circle of friends, most people attend the reception and not the ceremony.  Therefore if we do a recieving line at the ceremony, we will miss a good portion of our guests.  We have a cocktail hour before dinner so we hope to catch most of our guests then.

  • We are both very anti receiving line..I have always felt so awkward doing it - even if I know the couple very very well!  It is even worse if you are the persons date!  Hug the couple? Say congrats?  Pat on the back?

  • We'll be doing our speeches during dinner between-ish each course so there wont be much time for us to mingle during dinner.

  • I think we have decided against a reciving line because we are not getting married in a church and there is really no room for one. Also, I agree with PP's that a recieving line can be awkward for some people esp if you are just the date!

We are having a sweetheart table and I wouldnt mind if some people stopped by and we could thank them then. Other than that, I think we will do a walk around during dinner- having eaten our first. This is the plan, however we will see how that works with an almost 200 person wedding...!!!

<div>This! I am a little worried we won't get to see everyone or it will take too long with so many people. I think my plan is to have our DOC keep an eye on things and "save" us if we get caught up by anyone.</div>

  • We haven't formally canned the receiving line, but that's what's going to happen.  FI saw an idea on Four Weddings which involved holding everyone up immediately after the ceremony (dismissing them by aisle in order to greet them all)...but I really don't want to do that and he hasn't mentioned it since we watched the episode.

We're doing a SH table, so the linked idea is actually an option for us!  It will also be a relatively small wedding with no more than 75 guests, so we could also make our way around during dinner.

  • I hadn't planned on doing a receiving line.  We're literally getting married in the field outside the barn where we are having our reception.  After some pictures, we'll just be going inside, eating first (from our sweet heart table to give us time together alone to soak it in) and then we plan on walking around to talk to everyone.  Ours will be about 120 people so I just can't imagine it being too difficult.  I'm pretty social anyway!  :-)

  • We decided to do a receiving line immediately after the ceremony.  One, it gets everyone out of the ceremony so they can set up for the reception (we are having both in one location).  Two, we get to say hello to everyone, knowing full well we may not have a chance over the course of the day.
