Does anyone even eat wedding cake?

I got my first quote for a cake and I just about lost my mind. Is it just me or is $1200 a bit much for a cake? It wasn't even a a fancy one.

That is a lot for a cake!  Did the baker consider how many tiers you need to actually feed your guests?  The type of icing also factors into the price.  Are you considering other dessert options or just cake?

And on a personal note, I know my family will eat the cake... they are sweet and chocolate addicts!!  So I know FI and I must have a delicious cake.

This was just a 3 tiered, butter cream frosted, minimal decorations cake for 100. Darn the shoreline and thier outrageous prices.
 We might do a dummy layer on the bottom and a sheet cake that is the same flavors but not decorated to keep the cost down.

But 1200 seems INSANE! Maybe you can just do one small tier that you and your husband can cut, then sheet cake from the kitchen for everyone else.

That price seems redonkulous!!! 

I am not a cake eater and if I had my way I'd have a table full of different kids of pie.  But everyone thinks I'm crazy--- even though we're having our reception in a barn.  Barn = pie.  Just sayin'. 

We're compromising by having a small cake and some other desserts like cookies and brownies.  I'm also ordering my cake from someone that does it out of her home and not from a baker.  I expect to pay about $150 (if that).  I honestly know three separate people who do this as a 2nd job and started their own businesses using Facebook and word-of-mouth.  Maybe you can look into something like that?

I think $1200 is too expensive, but I'm not sure of the cost of my cake as it's included with the price of the venue.

I don't.  Usually catered meals have desserts anyways, and by the time you eat the dessert you have no room for cake.  That was one of the things I decided not to do; I know it's a tradition that some people wouldn't do with out but I decided it wasn't necessary.  I was trying to save money in areas, so I could splurge in others.

1200 is outrageous!!! Can you find someone that does cakes as a hobbie? Someone who does not run a bakery? I'm sure you can find a cake much cheaper. Definitely don't take that as your final quote. Shop around.

I think it completely depends how the cake is presented to guests. I do love cake, however I've been to some weddings where it was half ass presliced but was more of a serve yourself and no one ate it. On the flip side I've been to a wedding where it was served as dessert and of course it was eaten!

Instead serving dessert and having of a late night buffet, we are combining the two and doing a dessert buffet. After dinner we will "cut the cake" and while we do our first dance the venue will set up our dessert buffet. We are having an assortment of pies, strawberry trifle, our cake, and possibly some squares, fudge and a candy bar.

We will be providing our guests with Takeout boxes so they can fill up and bring home treats as their favors.

So.... If you end up paying a good price for your cake, maybe just make sure your cake is served in a way people will actually eat it.

The most expensive cake I was quoted so far was $2.50 per serving and that was for the speciality cake flavor, fondant, and a filing. Most of the prices I got was around 2.00 per serving

I always eat the cake and that price for a cake is ridiculous!!

I'm pretty much obsessed with cake.  Our cake was included with the venue so I'm not sure what the actual price is, but I'd shop around.  The shoreline is expensive, but that's just ridiculous!

I always eat cake, and I've never heard of a wedding cvake costing that much

if your family is a bunch of drinkers/dancers then they're definitely not eating the cake. FI and i will lose our families after cocktail hour. they barely even touch dinner, let alone the cake! I'm traditional in some ways and will still have a cake, but not for $1200!

The starting rate for cake here seems to be $5 per serving, even the ladies making it out of their houses seem to be charging that rate. Once you add delivery and plating charges you quickly hit a ridiculous price.
 I might have a friend of a friend willing to cut me a break. If not we will do without and maybe do some Italian cookies or cake pops.

That is crazy expensive! My best friend got married last year and her cake was for 150 guests and was absolutely beautiful and it was only 225.00 We are going the cupcake route and have a friend who used to do them professionally. She is doing 100 for cost of ingredients only as a gift. Then another friend is doing a 2 tier cake just for the wedding party as our gift.

$1200?  For some cake?? Oh h*ll no.

I think ours is around $200 (don't have the paperwork in my office) but for a much smaller crowd, around 75.

And no, I don't eat the cake.  I don't really care for cake, and by the time it's being served, I'm usually hammered in our clique having a blast so I don't even get to see it lol.

Another no cake here! None of our friends had cake at their weddings. Two had strawberry shortcake, one had mini pies, another had a mixture of homemade desserts, one had a sundae bar, and we're having bread pudding/mini root beer floats. Very happy to not spend that much money on a cake!!!
