Unusual situation - not sure what to do......

I am finding myself in a difficult situation and everyone seems to have a different opinion of what I should do.  Just after thanksgiving this last year I had weight lose surgery.  Best thing I have ever done!  Well I am losing weight very quickly and will continue to do so for the next 6-9 months.  Now I know I am probably crazy to even try and plan a wedding during this huge change but I am not a patient person and didnt want to put off the wedding over a year.  So heres my issue....what the heck do I do about a dress???  I have been looking of course, but have yet to go to a dress shop and try anything on as I am afraid I will get discouraged because I am still pretty heavy.  I have lost 50lbs already, but will probably lose at least another 50lbs by Sept.  I know if I want to order a dress it needs to happen very soon....but even the bridal shops I have talked to are stumped on how to go about doing that...I know a dress can be taken in about 2 sizes and be ok.... but I will be down about 5 dress sizes by Sept.....is there a lot of options for buying off the rack?  Anyone else planning to wait to get the dress and hope the one you love is in stock able to buy off the rack?  Do I pick a dress now and just order in a few sizes small and hope it fits???  Kinda stressing out....

Re: Unusual situation - not sure what to do......

  • There are TONS of places to buy used wedding dresses.  I considered it myself, and plan to sell my own dress after the wedding.  Even right on the Knot there is a classified board.  With your circumstances, this might be your best bet as you would be able to purchase a dress in the last 2 months prior to the wedding and allow time for alterations.  Most dresses are worn once and in excellent shape.  That's what I would do if I were in your shoes.

I know plenty of people who have had weight loss surgery and I know how quickly it comes off.  Sending my best to you!!!

  • I'd ask around about off-the-rack dresses.  Try David's Bridal.  Wait a few months, go in and try on dresses to get an idea (only try on dresses you can get off-the-rack) and hold off until you're a bit closer to the date.  A dress that looks good on you right now might not look the same if you're down 50 pounds...
  • I agree with the post about off the rack. Not only can you get the dress same-day, they are usually discounted!

That is exactly what I am thinking and why I am hesitant to buy a dress now!  Thanks!
  • When I got my dress at David's Bridal they said that anytime between then and my wedding date I can exchange the dress or get a bigger or smaller size if need be.  The only issue with that is  getting a dress that looks good on your current figure and it looking quite different on your new figure down the road.

  • I ditto David's bridal. I got my dress and reception dress from there. It depends on which designer you use how long it will take for the dress to come in. They also have plenty of sizes to try on so you get a feel for what the dress will look like on you and not just using your imagination. I waited until I was at a comfortable weight for me to even try on dresses. I've already had to send back because what I ordered was way to big.

I'd definately wait! Besides DB, a lot of salons offer off-the-rack or discontinued dresses. Plus September is getting close to the end of the wedding season, so it shouldn't be a problem being able to find a sample sale or discontinueds that can be sold and altered quickly. Just mentally prepare yourself and say by "X" date I'm going to start looking since I'll feel comfortable with my current weight. You have PLENTY of time though! I had a friend who got engaged and threw a wedding together in 3 months. She bought her dream dress off the rack same day.

I got my dress at DB. Walked out the door the day I tried it on because I loved it just the way it was. I would say they are prob a really really good option

  • Yea, I agree with PP about either a used dress or a floor model (which they will usually sell you when you're in a hurry!).  Picking your dress before a 50lb weight loss would make for some pretty MAJOR alterations (there was a girl in that exact situation on Say Yes to the Dress, they made it seem pretty dramatic, in the end of course it was do-able but cost her big time!)
  • PP's have great suggestions.  Also, consider fiding a dress with a corset back because they can easily be laced tighter or looser.  From what I've heard, the corset can range up to two dress sizes... Good luck finding a dress 1sttimemommy!!

Agree with everyone here...off the rack a few months before will probably be best.  I actually work in bariatrics...so many things about your body can and will change over the next several months, including your shape and body composition.  So keep working out (especially strength training), and keep the faith that an amazing dress will be on the rack later this year.  Congratulations on all of your positive changes!
