When did you start/do you plan to start trying on dresses?

I'm thinking January is OK - 9 mos out? I need to lose another 10 pounds to even feel comfortable trying on dresses. My goal loss is 20 lbs total.  What do you think?

  • I brought mine within the first month of being engaged. But 9 months should be good.

  • Literally the only reason I purchased mine in August was because they were having a trunk sale and I saved over $200 on my purchase by doing it then.

  • I think salons will tell you 6-8 months for a dress to come in. Mine came in 3 and they had to send it back, so it will end up being close to 8 months from the date I ordered it, and I still need to get alterations done.

  • I ordered mine in August and mine will be in by December 14th.

  • I am going to start trying on dresses next month, but don't plan on buying until January. I just want to get an idea of what I want and where I want to buy a dress. Once I get it down to 3 dresses I plan on making my final decision and purchase with our Mom's in January.

I first went dress shopping when my mom and I visited my sister (i think in march) to try on shapes in preparation for shopping at a brides for breast cancer event. I was ready for the experience to take several months if I didn't find anything at the event, but I did.

everything I read said to start around the 8m mark, probably because of ordering and alterations.

  • I'm planning on purchasing mine in Jan. I want to lose a few pounds before trying on anything and since I live so far from my mom and I want her there I'm going dress shopping while I'm on winter break so I've made an appt @ Kleinfeld I'm too excited!!
  • I've made my first appointment for next week. I recently dropped 10 dress sizes so I have NO idea what will look great on me now. I'm a mom with a csection fatty midsection even at a size 4. I was going to wait till I was 8 lbs lighter. But decided to just go in now and see what fits, almost fits and looks utterly disgusting. I am also a short bride so I'm worried about alterations and fittings.

  • I started shopping as soon as I got engaged basically. I was excited!

I ended up buying my dress in April, as it was a sample so it was now or never.

  • I went to try on dresses just for fun right after we got engaged. I tried on the Alfred Angelo Disney wedding dresses (they were all out of my budget so it really was just dress up and I surpringly didn't love any of them). I went again in February, again just supposed to be for fun, but this time seeing if what I wanted was in my price range. And I fell in love with a dress. Started crying as soon as I put it on. It was a sample and they offered 30% off so I bought it after going home and talking it over with FI.

  • I think it also depends on the designer.  I've heard there are a few designers that can take up to 9 months to get in.  Other designers don't take as long.  I ordered Mori Lee in July and it's due to get here in December.  I could have waited and I would have been fine...

This.  I'm 5'3", built like Betty Boop with a kid face, and the only thing that didn't make me look like a little girl playing dressup was a dress that followed my body.

I went dress shopping for the first time in Jan, just to see what I liked and didn't.  A month ago I planned to seriously shop, and my dress was the first one I tried on.  We went through 5 more, but when I put the first one back on, I knew :).  She'll be ready in January, leaving plenty of time for alterations and all that jazz.

  • I went play shipping in May to see what looked good and what didn't. Decided I was not happy with my weight. I am 3 pounds away from my shopping goal and 20 pounds away from goal weight. I'm going shopping again in 2 weeks but don't plan to buy until January.

I am kind if short and plan on NOT wearing heels so my dress definitely needs to be shortened. I am not a csection mom but still have the blubber from 13 years ago... Even when I do lose weight my stomach is never right so I just went for it ... Fell in love with my dress on the mannequin and cried when I put it on. Just so glad it was in the price range when I saw it. If it wasn't in my price range AND on sale on top of that I probably would not have even put it on.

  • I actually tried on dresses for the first time today. Really liked a couple of the gowns I tried on today, but don't plan on buying a dress untill Jan/Feb. I plan on trying to loose another dress size or 2 before then. I plan on going and trying on some more dresses in a few weeks and see if I still have strong feelings for the one I am thinking about now.

  • my main problem with dresses is always my boobs - and even when i lose weight they never get any smaller - so my dress is going to be huge everywhere except my boobs - strictly to fit my chest i had to go an even bigger size ---
we will see though - the rest of the dress is going to be bigger and is going to have to be altered big time...

  • Whew - I don't feel so worried now - I saw all these posts of Sept. 2013 brides buying dresses and thought maybe I was delaying too long. So....10 lbs to lose by Jan. That's doable. Hard through the holidays, but just need to keep focused on the dress.

  • I actually just bought my dress on Monday! I was too excited to hold off on trying dresses on for more than a month. I was just going for fun, and BAM!

January is great timeline though! You're right on track!
