What spice(s) should we use??

I'm just starting wedding planning but there are a few things I KNOW my FI and I want we want to do spices as favors. It's edible and useful but not just a handful of candy. We love cooking dinner together and experimenting with spice combos. My FI is awesome at this. When we have people over they always ask what he put on the food.

Our wedding isn't really a theme. We've decided on peacock colors (blues, purples, greens) and I'm going to use a FEW peacock feather accents - fascinator in my hair, peacock feathers in some bouquets. We are planning a summer wedding and I can't decide on what spices to use!

On the one hand, something that a lot of people use will be ... well...more useful! BUT, they may already have a ton of it. On the other hand, if I choose something too "exotic" it may never be used. Any ideas? I've read on some boards that people like BBQ rub.

This wedding isn't for A WHILE. We have 2 years but my mom is already HOUNDING me about what we want to do so I'm trying to decide the details of what we know we want to do. All suggestions welcome :) What spices would YOU want!

Re: What spice(s) should we use??

  • Are you buying these pre-packaged or packaging them youself?  I'm sure you know spices have a year shelf life, so you're going to be best off to wait as long as possible on this if they're not pre-packaged (meaning sealed).

If you are doing one spice as opposed to a spice mix, I would go with something familiar, but different, like pink peppercorns, different kinds of salt, etc.  If you're going with a spice mix, I wouldn't choose anything that's known for being super hot/spicy.
  • Spice mixes that can be used for a single meal would be a good idea.  That way you can fit in your love of experimenting, but not give them a bunch of spices that they won't use.  For example, you could do a rosemary chicken rub mix that has the garlic, paprika, and rosemary already in it, and then include the basic recipe on the package.
  • I'm loving the chicken rub idea...and we love Rosemary and Garlic. Plus that's something pretty universal. I'm planning on pouring the spices into jars myself, i figure it's cheaper that way. If I find somewhere to order from already packaged that is about the same that's fine too. I'm definately not planning on buying now. I'm trying to figure what we want and about how much it will cost so we can do some better budgeting. Also, I can keep my eyes open for things as we go along to buy on sale knowing it will get used instead of buying it, then deciding I don't want it.

Thank you for the ideas :)
  • We are thinking of doing the same thing and I found this on Etsy and it seemed cute and reasonably priced: http://www.etsy.com/listing/78519001/edible-wedding-favor-spice-kits-party
