i am thinking about what favors to give. i was thinking of all creative ideas but now i'm thinking i want to give a practical favor that people will actually like or use. from the last weddings i have been to i have received chopsticks, wine stoppers, coasters and chocolate. the chocolate i gave to a kid at my table though i would've eaten it but i wasn't that excited about it. and the other favors are still in their boxes untouched!
is there a favor that you have received at a wedding that you have actually used/eaten?

Re: best favor you have received
If I really love the couple, I'll keep the personalized crap and try to find a reason to use it, but really, I have a good wine opener. I have matching sets of wine glasses. I don't serve shots at home anymore. So I don't need any of that stuff.
Of the favors I've received, matches are always good, but I like the boxes with matches vs the matchbooks. Good for lighting fires.
I bake a lot, and have used metal cookie cutters, melted chocolate and poured that into the cookie cutters for holiday favors. You can find small metal cookie cutters in hearts, diamonds, stars, and other appropriate shapes for a wedding.
Good luck.
Have also been to a wedding where they did donations and loved it.
What we decided on was donations (to oxfam) and homemade truffles. Luckily I have the best MOH in the world who is covering the truffles (i'm helping make, she is boxing and paying) for us, this means we can put all the money budgeted towards the donation. Just made them yesterday and they are amazing!
My best friend did shot glasses with m & m's wrapped up in them. It was cute and the shot glasses can be used or be cherished.
We'll be doing either chocolate or half wine bottles.
[QUOTE]We are doing a donation in lieu of favors. Two wedding I've been to did this and loved the idea. And since i volunteer for an animal rescue I thought they could use the money more then trying to figure out a favor that would please everyone.

Make your donation. I believe in donations. I make them myself. I think they're a good thing to do.
But don't pretend that they're a favor to your guests. Because they're not. They're a favor to the organization, and to you. You're taking the money you'd spend on a little something for your guests and giving it to someone else. How do you figure that's a favor for your guests?
Honestly, I don't need a favor. I don't really want a favor. You're already giving me food, drinks, entertainment. I don't need a matchbook or m&ms (although I LOVE m&ms) as a thank you.
But please don't in any, way, shape or form think that giving $$ to a charity is somehow doing something for me.
I'd liken it to a guest coming to your wedding and giving you a card that says "In honor of your marriage, I have given a donation to the "eastern micronesia tsunami prevention fund". It may be important to your guest, but it probably doesn't mean anything to you. So it's not really a gift for you, is it?
The best favor I've ever received was a decorated sugar cookie. It was yummy! All other non-edible items have since disappeared.
It may seem tacky to some, but the best favor I have received was a koozie. I am a beer drinker, so they always come in handy. My FI and I have already decided we're going to have them at our reception.
I also always like match boxes.

I have been set on making a donation in place of buying trinkets for favors. I feel better when couples do this because I don't need any more sugar or candles or knick-knacks to eventually throw away or go straight to my hips. I feel guilty when I toss the favors they spent so much time and money on. I'd feel better knowing that that money went to a more meaningful cause. Also, with so many material things associated with weddings, I feel that it would be honorable to humble yourself and think about a charitable cause. And honestly, if a guest's feathers get ruffled because I donated money to childern's cancer research as opposed to buying them a matchbook with my name on it, they shouldn't be any guest of mine in the first place.
