My plan is to buy floating lanters (~one for every two people, since they require assistance) and then get personalized matchboxes as the favors, but also to light the lanterns. Is this enough of a favor to give to the guests?
For me, no. A favor, when given, is another thank you to the guest for attending your wedding and reception and celebrating with you. Anything to be used during the wedding or reception is more for you that for your guests. It would be better to have the lanterns and invite guests to join you in lighting them (as long as that is allowed by your venue) and forgo formal favors.
You mean the "Wish Lanterns" that are all over Wedding TV shows right now? Those aren't a favor or gift to the guest. Matchboxes aren't really either, TBH.
That being said, favors are not a wedding requirement. If you want to do wish lanterns and matchboxes, great, but I doubt many guests would take the box of matches with them at the end of the night.
It might be safer/easier to light the lanterns with one of those extended stick lighters though.
No for me, as well. I don't really have any use for matches, but I know some people would be picking up all the extras. I would rather have no favor than a favor I didn't like.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14
