Ideas for Desination Wedding favors?

First is it rude not to have favors? Personally I am not that into them but my Mum keeps asking about them!

We are getting married in Bali in September and am struggling for ideas on what to use as favors - as we are travelling a long way i dont want to take anything too big or anything we will have difficultly with in customs. Also I don't want anything that is crazy expensive. I was thinking maybe fortune cookies with personalized facts or fortunes, or maybe fans as it will be hot.

Anyone else have any good ideas? Thanks!

Favors are not expected so it's certainly acceptable to skip them.  I think especially since you're having a destination wedding that favors are just more of a hassle for the reasons you mentioned.

Try posting on the Destination Weddings board - you might find other Bali brides!  You can find it on the left column under the heading "Wedding Theme Boards".  We're having our DW in Hawaii... in 31 days!

I don't want to fly or ship stuff over, same as you.  From the Hawaii board I've gotten ideas - box of macadamia nut shortbread cookies per person.  Basically something local and edible.

Or, in lieu of favors you can consider doing out of town (OOT) bags.  Basically a little gift bag per person or per couple filled with your choice of items:  a lot of women will include bottle of water or local drink, local food snacks, map of the area and attractions, a note from bride/groom with wedding events listed, etc.  People get really creative.  Basically stuff to help the guest feel more comfortable in the destination.  This option can be more expensive and take more work as you'll have to purchase & assemble the items.

I'm still trying to decide.
