I think these are really cute! Or you could do the card ones that you plant to grow flowers.

There are companies that make handmade paper embedded with flower seeds-the entire paper is planted in a garden and flowers grow right from the paper! I googled and found this one (link below) that has small shapes (approximately 3"x3") embedded with wildflower seeds for $9.50/25 and larger shapes (4"x4") for $19.50/25)...some companies even do wedding invite kits, around $75/25 invites, if you want to take the eco-friendly idea even further.
Plantable is nice, but not everyone likes to garden or lives in a place (ie an apartment) where they have the option to plant anything.
There's a person on etsy who sells birdseed/suet in the shape of a heart that people can hang outside (or even toss out the car window. lol) - we're considering going the DIY route with this one. There are lots of tutorials if you google it. They're not that hard to make at all and birdseed is really cheap.
i'm giving specialty tea in little boxes made from recycled paper. & they're being used as the escort cards. that way if I know someone won't drink a certain type of tea, I can give them another kind, or candies.

You can also make or buy these in the shape of a letter (you can use the first letter of your new shared last name)!

We haven't done it yet, but our plan is to go through www.arborday.org
For $1 per tree (which is pretty much what you would have spent on favors per person) they will plant a tree in a National Forest.
You can also buy actual seedlings, but like previously mentioned, not everyone has a place to plant a tree.
We are currently thinking of buying 100 trees to get planted in a National Forest (our guest list is around 100), and then getting 15 or so seedlings in case someone wants to plant them at their house.
you can do reusable plastic water bottles that cna be personalized too! i have a hilton head island destination wedding and so the water bottles will have a palm tree and the wedding date on it. try printglobe.com
