Favors

Unique Favours

Me and my fiance are having a summer wedding in 2014, with approximately 350 guests. we both have big families and a large group of friends. He had attended a wedding where the favors were fighter fish, one per family/couple. Together we are considering combining the favours and centerpeices and having goldfish in rosebowls centrepeices and having the fish as giveaways. This is just a rough inital idea but if any one has some pointers or comments I would appreciate it.

Re: Unique Favours

  • Please please please do not use live animals as your favors. The majority will end up dead. No one will be thrilled to take home a live fish. This is the worst idea for favors there could possibly be. The only thing worse would be to give out puppies and kittens. Please don't do this.

  • I would feel so badly for the fish.

  • Like I said this was a inital idea and if people don't want to take them home, we aren't forcing them.

Flush them?!?!?! <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-surprised.gif" border="0" alt="Surprised" title="Surprised" />
  • Oh, please abort this mission! Most people probably won't want to take them home, and then you will have to do something with the leftovers. Edible is really the best way to go when it comes to favors. People tend not to want "stuff" to keep from your wedding.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Surprised What would you do with all of the extras? Flush them?!?!?! Surprised

Actually the petshop we were talking with was open for returns if we needed to.
  • Agree with PPs.  Fish are not a good idea for centerpieces or favors.  Think about it - what if a fish dies during dinner?  Who will be responsible for removing the dead fish from the bowl?  Do you really want to take a chance that after centerpieces are set the room becomes too warm or too cold and bunches of the fish die? If the fish needs to perform another biological function will someone be on alert to clean bowls?  This could get messy, smelly and potentially unappetizing.

There are so many beautiful ideas for centerpieces with moving elements and water - suspended flowers or fruits, even using stones and lights.  It would be far better to go in another direction that is less cruel to the fish and to come up with other ideas for your centerpieces and favors.

  • Even the best edible favors get left behind, so you can imagine how many fish you're going to have to return to the pet store.  Why not save yourself two trips to the pet store and go with a different favor.  Or just eliminate favors, they certainly aren't necessary.

And aside from the ethical issues raised, one inactive fish in a rose bowl isn't a very attractive centerpiece.

Live animals are not props and shouldn't be used for decor.  It stresses the fish out, and many will end up dead. Additionally, your guests will have the oh so lovely view of watching the fish poop during your reception.  And when they die (and trust, some of them WILL die) they get to sit at their table and watch a dead floating fish all night.

There are tons of reasons why this is a horrible, horrible idea.  If you search "fish centerpieces" on this board, you will be able to see dozens of them.  But the first and most important one is, it is inhumane to subject the fish to this.

Also, this has been overdone to death.  It's not unique at all, and people are finally learning that it is a horrible idea.

Vendor - why would anyone want to shop with you when you clearly cannot read the terms you agreed to when you created a TK account?  NO VENDORS are allowed on these message boards.
  • Thanks for the comments :)
  • My aunt did goldfish. Just oner per table. The kids were so excited to take them home.  She also had a deal with a pet shop that she could bring them back if needed. But in the end it wasn't necessarry. Everyone loved them. I don't think its cruel at all. You know your guests and if they would be excited to take them home or not.

Oh lord. your first and second post on TK is to defend a horribly bad idea?   Do 5 minutes of research, and you will find out why it's cruel.
