Inexpensive DIY favors

I am hitting a road block for favor ideas. Does anyone have any cute summery favor ideas that wouldn't break my checkbook? We have a June wedding that is themed around the University of Pittsburgh, so there is a lot of navy and "champagne" gold. I thought of just doing M&M's in cute boxes with our colors, but feel like that's been done so many times. Any ideas? Thanks!

Fortune cookies, personalized m&m's, personalized hershey kisses and mini hershey bars also personalized, you can find the labels/wrappers online, cheapest I found is from Etsy seller. You personalize them then put them on the chocolates.

m&M's, jelly beans, home made sugar cookies dipped in royal icing in your wedding colors?

I definitely like the idea of something edible.  M&Ms in the wedding colors have been done a lot, but that doesn't mean they are a bad idea.

Do you both have a favorite candy?  Is there anything that you both have a story about?  It's always better when it's personal, not just tied to the 'theme'.

Perhaps popcorn?  Like you might have munched while watching hockey games at University of Pittsburgh.

Hmm... honey?  There's always good play-on-words you can do with that for wedding favors.

How about mints, that say, "It mint so much that you could make it!"

We did M&M's in our wedding colors. The personalized ones were way too expensive and besides, our first names both begin with M, so it was perfect. We bought favor kits at Wal-Mart, I can't remember how much it came out to be per favor. But I do know it was a bit more than we wanted to spend.

However, I know tulle circles and string (you could even do your wedding colors or Pittsburgh's colors) are relatively cheap. It just takes some time and patience tying all of the individual bags.

How necessary are favors any way, especially when you are on a tight budget??
