florist vs grocery store florist

I have found someone who does all the floral arrangements for our local grocery store.  She does weddings on the side. Ive met with her & im waiting to hear back on prices.  I know shes going to be much more reasonable than a "florist", but I have some concerns.  When we met it took 3hrs!  Im concerned about I really have no guarentees, if she gets sick, im out of luck.  Im just a tad uneasy about it all.  The florist Ive met with was so overpriced....floweres were as much as the FOOD!  has anyone else not used a florist & had a amatuer do their flowers? how did it work out?

    Why don't you look into other florists around your area.  Also when you talk with a florist you have to let them know your budget...if not then they will go slightly more extravagant with their proposals.

    Three hours is quite a long time to meet with any vendor but if she doesn't do weddings very often then she may be trying to be thorough.

    Also, if you liked the florists work but not the price you can always cut back and ask what flowers can be used that would decrease the price.

    You could also consider doing them yourself. I had called florists, all their prices were more than the food for my bouquet and 3 BMs! I wasn't even going to order bouts or centerpieces through them!! You can order bulk flowers online or pick up some bouquets from Sam's Club or Costco and make them yourself. I just ended up going with silk flowers for the bouquets, because I'm on a super-tight budget and for $30 I made mine, and the BMs bouquets (there won't be bouts because the guys decided to wear their service uniforms). Thankfully, my BFFs mom said we can raid the plants around her house for centerpieces (I'm doing simple centerpieces--antique glass bottles with flowers in them).
