Sinking Apples

So I see pictures all over the place with apples nicely in a vase with water and a pretty floating candle on top.   My problem:  Apples don't sink.   Things I’ve Tried:  I read one place that you boil them first and then the air leaves and the apples sink.  But then all you have is mushy apples.   I also pushed one screw up the bottom middle of the apple, still not heavy enough.  So, any other ideas?  Please Help!

When you boiled your apples did you first poke a hole in the bottom of the apple to help release the air and replace it with water?  I read that if you poke a hole in the apple, when boiling the air will be release but water will seep into the apple causing it to become heavier and not float.

If that doesn't work, try threading them onto a long dowel rod and then securing the bottom apple to a frog (a round disc made up of pointy metal spears...used by florists) to keep it in place.

Yes, we poked holes in the apples first.
