Hydrangeas in July

Hello,
I am a semi-new bride here on the knot and I have a flower question. Hydrangeas are my favorite flowers and I was always fairly resolute as haveing them be my wedding flower. I am getting married July 13th of next year and I was talking to one of my moms friends and mentioned that I was using them as my flowers. She went crazy talking about how they do terrible in the heat and they will wilt and look awful by the end of the reception. I was fairly shocked by this as hyrangeas in my mind were fairly sturdy flowers. I am using them for bouquets and boutineers s well as ceremony decorations. I was in a wedding over labor day a few years ago and we held orchids which did not last the heat at all and by the reception were very wilty and sad looking. Have any of you ladies used hydrangeas? Was it succesful? Thanks in advance for the input!

Re: Hydrangeas in July

  • I used hydrangeas in my bouquets for our wedding last July 16th.  They held up fine.  We made sure to keep the bouquets in water until right before we went down to the ceremony.  Once the ceremony and pictures were done (we took pictures outside for an hour) and we came back in and were announced the bouquets went back in their vases and were used to decorate the cake table.

I would suggest that you not use hydrangeas for bouts.  They will definitely wilt most likely before your ceremony even starts.  Hydrangeas need water and if they are out of water for a long period of time (overnight) they will definitely wilt.

I am surprised that the orchids your friend used wilted so quickly because orchids should hold up well in the heat since they are a tropical flower.

My one suggestion is to use a well known and well reviewed florist.  They know the best way to handle any flower so that it will stay beautiful all day long.

With that being said, here is a pick of my bouquets out in the heat (they had been out of water for about an hour or maybe a bit more.  They look great to me!

And this is one of my alter

    arrangements...

Find a reputable florist and trust what they say.  My mom is a huge flower person and was concerned about the flowers I wanted, but our florist was able to walk in with photos from weddings she's done and show us weddings done around the same time as mine will be and how they held up during pictures.  A florist will likely have done enough July weddings to know what is and isn't possible.  That would be my first question to the florist, I want hydrangeas, have you done a wedding in summer heat using hydrangeas and do you think they will hold up well.
  • As PPs have said, talk to a reputable florist.  Hydrangeas can last just fine if they're well taken care of and prepped properly.  I agree that they will not be a good choice for boutonnieres, but they would be fine for bouquets as long as you keep them in water while they're not in use.
  • We used bouquets of just hydrangeas for the bridesmaids, and they held up all day and night. As Maggie said, we made sure when they were not being photographed , or walking down the aisle, the bouquets stayed in vases of water to keep them hydrated. Depending how long you have them out of the water, they may start to wilt, but perk right back up once in water.
