Is a hibiscus and bougainvillea bouquet a bad idea?

I'd like to pick local flowers for my bouquet, since those are my favorites and I have a ton growing, and as a bonus it would also save money. I was thinking a bouquet of deep red bougainvillea with yellow hibiscus. But I don't really hear much about wedding bouquets with these two flowers. Are there potential pitfalls, or do you think I could pull this off?

For the bougainvillea I know there are thorns to prune off, which is no big deal. I've also practicet picking a bouquet of them to see how long they'd last, and they seem to last a full day, which is more than enough time because our ceremony will be short. I haven't practiced with the hibiscus, so I'm not sure how long those will last.

My last issue about this is that we were also going to make little corsages for the wedding party, but a hibiscus is pretty huge and a bougainvillea seems to look better in a larger bunch, so I haven't figured out how to make smaller versions. Maybe use a different type of flower? Any ideas on all this? thanks.

  • Add some feathers or small filler flowers to your boquet and use them for bouts.  Otherwise, I love your idea, the colors would be beautiful.

    Best wishes.
  • I think your ideas are good, however, you may want to have a back up plan. Things happen, like long dry spells, colder than normal winters, earlier than normal summers. I realize you are in Texas, and maybe the flowers you mentioned bloom all year like an annual versus a perennial. I say this because many brides post they want peonies, lilacs, lilly of the valley, all flowers that bloom in northern climates once for about a week, all at the whim of Mother Nature.

A good backup plan would be looking at local inexpensive floral outlets such as farmer's markets or looking into flowers that are easy to get year round like roses, carnations, lillies, all from florists.

Also, if you have a Costco membership, they have pretty elegant floral kiosks in the stores with lovely fresh flowers, very reasonably priced.

Good luck. I really hope it works for you.
