Hydrangea bouqet

Has anyone done their own hydrangea bouquets?  I've heard this flower does not hold up well in heat.  My wedding's on the beach in August but I want this flower as my bouquet and to make my own bouquet.  Just want to get some insight into others' experiences with it and if they had any regrets.

Re: Hydrangea bouqet

  • I have used hydrangeas in bouquets for a late spring wedding in May it was nearly 95 degrees the day of and it was an outdoor wedding.

The flowers held up well, but I did keep them in air conditioning until 3 hours before the wedding. After that they were kept in vases with water when not being held for photos and the ceremony. I also purchased them two days before the wedding and created the bouquets the morning of (it was an early evening wedding). I placed the order three weeks before the wedding for all the flowers, I found the flower department at my local Harris Teeter had the best deal!

As far as creating bouquets with hydrangeas they are very easy, depending on size of the flower head you can make a small posey with one to three stems and a small to medium bouquet with three to six stems. All you need is flower wrapping tape to wrap them together then ribbon or fabric to cover the tape. Very easy and will be beautiful!

    I hope this helps!

  • I had quite a few flowers that are known to be difficult to work with in warm weather for my late May, outdoor, Florida wedding.  It was well into the 90s with high humidity and they all held up well and even lasted for days after.  They were kept in water until about an hour before the wedding for pictures and I didn't put them back in water until after the wedding reception was over.  Go for it, your bouquets will be beautiful.

  • You'll want to order them a couple days ahead and keep them in a cool place.  Cut the stem at an angle and make sure there is plenty of floral food and water (mix per instructions).  If you soak the head in water prior to arranging, it will hold up better.  When you have your bouquets complete, keep the stems free, so they can be placed in water when you are not using them!  I use them frequently and have not had problems.  Good luck!

  • Thanks for the info!  Feeling more confident about DIY hydrangea bouquets.  It was easy with silk flowers but I want the real thing for my wedding.  I'll follow those instructions and make sure they're always in water.  THANKS!

  • Those are so pretty!  I was going to also try and get my own hydrangea bushes this spring and attempt to grow my own white/blue/pink ones for my wedding.  Worse case, I can still order from Sam's club but I'm so in love with that flower!  It is kind of scary they died right after the ceremony though.
